A few metres away lay a young boy. Her crimson eyes meet his ghostly white ones for a brief moment before the room is filled with cheers of joy, laughter and dancing. As the boy danced around the woman, she flung her arm out to catch his before lifting him up off the ground.
As she held the young lad, her eyes scanned over his wine coloured skin and frosty hair before meeting his strongly coloured eyes. After a moment of silence, she spoke.
“You summoned me?” her voice …show more content…
both soft yet cold as ice. The boy squirmed in her grasp, silently begging to be put down. She accepted his request for freedom and slowly placed him down. Once he felt the ground beneath his feet, he took a deep breath, and then spoke.
“Yes. I’m Albatus Shalmonds.” His voice was shaky, but he managed not to stutter.
“Well then, Albatus.” The elf crouched down on the ground in front of Albatus.
“I will now place the seal that marks our bond between master and familiar. Are you sure you want to do this? If so, is there a certain place you wish for the mark to be placed?”
Albatus placed a flat hand on his chest.
“Here” came his single worded response.
Nodding, she placed her left hand where his once was and lifted her right hand in front of her face.
“Once I place the seal the only way to break the bond is to release me. To do so, you simply say ‘I, name, release my familiar from its bond’. After the contract has been broken, you may never summon me as a familiar again. You may summon another familiar but you cannot put the seal in the same place. Having summoned too many familiars, your body will eventually fade and your soul will cease to exist.” She stared straight into Albatus’ eyes. “Do you still wish to form a bond with me?”
“Yes, I do.” After the words left his mouth he felt a burning sensation coming from where his hand hovered over his chest. He was biting down on his lips to prevent any screams from escaping and clenched his fists to stop himself from trying to push her away. The pain gradually subsided and she lowered her hand from his chest and rose from her knees.
“What is your first command, master?”
“First of all, I want you to call me Albatus or Albi, anything but Master.”
“Very well Albatus. I will cease referring to you as ‘master’ and address you only by your given name. Is there anything else, Albatus?”
“Two more things actually. One, what is your name?”
To this the Elf just shook her head and explained that she does not have one and he must give her the name.
He folded his small arms and began to tap his chin in thought.
“Sergio.”
The elf appeared to like her given name as a small smile appeared on her face.
“And what is the other thing, Albatus?” Albatus’ eyes fell to the ground and started shuffling on the spot.
“W-well, Sergio, um, c-can you be my mother?”
To say Sergio was shocked would be an understatement. He had summoned her, the first leader of the Elven Race. An elf who was so strong, that she could have wiped out entire armies, to be his familiar, to follow his every command and he wanted her to play house? Sergio let out a small sigh that seemed to go unnoticed by Albatus.
“If it is your wish, I would gladly be your mother, Albi.”
The boy’s face sprouted a smile so big, it would make an elephant, look like a mouse.
He grabbed her by the hand and started leading her around the large house. Albatus would show her each room; point out a few key features, and then move on to the next room. Sergio was quiet for most of the house tour except when asking or responding to a question. Albatus had stopped in front of two closed doors that lead to a room which he hadn’t shown Sergio.
“Well, that’s the house tour over and done with.” Albatus dropped Sergio’s arm and turned to face her. “Now on to our last, and most important, mission for today,” He turned back around, grabbed the two handles and pushed the doors open with as much force as he could muster.
“Dinner”
After slipping the tray into the oven, Sergio turned around only to be met with a hand full of flour to the face. Albi giggled and claimed that his hand just so happened to ‘slip’. Sergio just stood there shocked before quickly turning and grabbing the bag of flour next to her before tipping half a bag of flour onto his head. A full blown war had broken out in the kitchen and flour could be seen flying in every direction as the two tried to throw flour at each other yet try not to get hit by flour being thrown in their direction.
After ten minutes, and all the flour had run out, the two had called a truce and went to check on their dinner. After deciding that it was cooked, she proceeded to pull the tray out of the oven and set it on the stove.
Albi stared at their masterpiece with wide eyes and grin as he took in the sight. The mushrooms, capsicum, pineapple and onion were swimming in the sea of gooey, melted cheese which rested on a crispy, bread like base. Sergio then added the finishing touch by sprinkling on a pinch or oregano. Albi looked up at her with excitement lighting up his eyes.
“What do you call this again?” Sergio shook her head and chuckled at the boy’s excitement.
“Pizza.” She replied as she went to go get their plates.
“It looks better than anything the kitchen ever makes!” He watched as she lifted a slice and placed it on a plate. His eyes follow the string of cheese connecting it to the other slices.
“It is.” She gave Albi his plate and her plate and the tray the dining room,
“Though, it uses a lot less flour than the machines.” They left the kitchen behind to clean itself up from all the flour
Happy, adventurous, extreme, those are a few words one might use to describe the time Sergio and Albatus had spent together. They had been sky skating, hover carting, teleported to other realms and had cooked a grand total of 1000 pizzas, just to name a few.
Their adventures were joyous and to see either one sad was an occasion so rare, it never happened. However, Albatus seemed to be a bit off for the past 2 weeks. Most days, he wouldn’t leave his bed, and if he did, his eyes would be blood shot and puffy from crying, his face would be a pale plum colour and looked like he would drop dead at any given moment.
Many times his mother had asked what was wrong but he would just bite his lip and shake his head. Sergio gave up asking and instead, just continued to comfort her son to the best of her ability.
For the past few nights, she had slept in his room so he would at least get a few hours of sleep. Whenever she felt the tears that would fall from his beautiful eyes, or hear the whimpers that would leave his small lips, she would hold him close to her and whisper comforting words into his ear while gently rubbing his back.
Most nights, that would stop the crying but that night, nothing seemed to calm his cries for help.
Down in the control room, Sergio was setting up the houses systems to make sure the cleaning schedule was all set for tonight and the following morning until she heard it.
The shouts of terror coming from upstairs caused her to quickly forget whatever she was doing and race up to where the screams had come from, Albi’s room.
The yelling had stopped and silence was all that could be heard from inside the room. Sergio’s heart dropped at the heart wrenching sight before her.
Her son was curled up on his side in a tight ball with tears pouring down his face and a corner of his sheets in his mouth as to muffle the sound of his sobs. Without a second thought, Sergio immediately rushed to his side and wrapped her arms around him. She begged him to tell her what was wrong so she could help him get through it in any way possible. He took the blanket out of his mouth and looked up at her, tears still trickling down his face.
He slowly nodded and proceeded to tell her everything.
He started at the beginning. How his mother had died shortly after giving birth to him, how his father struggled with the loss of his beloved and tried every day to look happy for his son, to be a good father figure but on his sons 4th birthday he couldn’t take it any longer, and took his life. Leaving the terrified, young boy, all alone in a big house, with no one to love him. Albi had to pause a few times because he was sniffling or had begun crying.
As Sergio listened to his story, her arms around him tightened and tears began to fall from her eyes. She was running her fingers through his hair in an attempt to calm both of them down.
“I will never leave your side, Albi.” Sergio let a genuine smile run across her features. “Familiar bond or not, I always want to be by your side, whether you want me here or not.”
Albi had a small smile on his face before yawning softly.
“Thank you, mama. For everything.”
After Sergio slipped into bed, the two drifted off into sleep.
I awoke to find the bed cold and empty. I sat up and looked around the room. He isn’t here? Where could he be? I walked around the house and called out his name. He wasn’t there. Now, I started to go into full panic mode. I ran outside of the mansion’s tall dark gates and into the nearby forest.
I used the seals which bonded us together to try and locate where he was in this grim forest.
Leaves crunched and twigs snapped under my feet as I ran like my life depended on it and in a way, it did. Over these few months I had gotten to know Albi so well, if something were to happen to him, I would never forgive myself.
As I ran I seemed to be feeling as though my body was getting lighter. Confused I looked down and noticed that my skin had become slightly opaque. The sudden realisation of what was happening hit me like a ton of bricks. I looked up from where I was and saw an image that would be burned into my mind forever.
Albi, the small boy I had grown to love, my son, had a noose around his neck.
I ran as fast as my disappearing legs could, to stop him, to hold him, tell him everything would be okay.
As I ran I screamed for him to stop but he wouldn’t listen he just looked up at me with a sad smile and a face full of tears. By now my vision had started to go blurry and I was only a few meters away but it was too late.
My vision had gone black and his last words still ring through my head.
“I love you, Mama.”
I loved you, my
son.
