breaking bad habits
I was raised in a house hold where the use of profanity was more common than family dinners; I’ve adopted my family’s potty mouths and I would like to stop because it drives me crazy and my boyfriend says its un-lady like. When I’m in a professional setting, around my parents and other elders like a light switch I can turn the profanity off. When I’m interacting with my peers it’s almost like I don’t have a filter, unless I say the sentence in my head a few times before I actually verbalize it. My New Year’s resolution for the last three years has been to stop using profanity and I’ve failed miserably each year, this year I told myself that I’m a work in progress and I’ll try my best to work on it. During my baseline period I noticed the I used profanity once while in front of my mom and I quickly apologized; however, while with peers and my boyfriend in an course of an hour I used profanity more than forty times like twenty times per half hour. I’m going to give it my all to reduce the amount of profanity that I use each day, by reducing the amount of profanity that I use each day the less dependent that I will become on the bad behavior (bad language).
The first technique that I believe can help to rid me of my potty mouth is reinforcements; which can be described by Skinner as anything that will work towards increasing the occurrence of the operant response. Terry (2009) (pg. 101) I can use reinforcements (positive or negative) to decrease the amount of times that I use profanity throughout the day, using reinforcements to strengthen my mental capabilities and keep the profanity switch turned off. The article The Use of Reinforcer Assessments in Evaluating Psychotropic Medication Effects considers the effects of reinforcements, while working with patients which would increase or decrease the patient’s unwanted mental behaviors. While conducting research; researchers used to methods of approach when using reinforcements, deprivations and

Bobs Bad Habit Skin Body Membrane Case Study Bob, a 49-year old painter, arrives for his appointment with Mary, his dental hygienist, to have his teeth cleaned. He has not had a dental examination for three years. Mary takes a complete health and dental history. She makes note of the fact that Bob smokes approximately two packs of cigarettes a day, occasional cigars at parties, and drinks two or three beers daily after working in the hot sun. He is concerned about the appearance of his lips and teeth. Mary begins treatment by carefully observing Bobs face and lips for any abnormal moles (nevi) or lesions. She notices that Bob has a deep tan and that the left side of his lower lip is raised, firm, and scaly. The lesion is about 9mm in diameter. Bob tells her that his lip has had that appearance for about a year. Mary also notes that Bobs skin is quite wrinkled for someone his age. Mary urges Bob to make an appointment with a physician for an examination of the scaly lesion. Bob does so that following week. The physician performs a biopsy on the lesion. Histologic examination of the biopsy confirms that Bob has squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of oral cancer. Its cause is associated with exposure to the sun, consumption of alcohol, and the use of tobacco in all forms. Snuff, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars are the major risk factors for oral cancer. Cells in the stratum spinosum of the epidermis undergo anaplasia (reversion to an immature, undifferentiated form), transforming into cancer cells and dividing rapidly. Incidence of metastasis is low if the lesion is removed at an early stage. Bobs physician recommends immediate surgical excision of the lesion. Following excision of the lesion, which had tumor-free margins, further examination and testing revealed no signs of metastasis (migration to other tissues). Bobs lesion was small, and he is told all cancer cells were removed. He will however,…

Behavioral therapies consist of therapist using modeling and operant conditioning. In modeling they exhibit a chosen behavior and direct the individual to reproduce it. In operant conditioning, they reinforce such behaviors, first by shaping them, breaking them down so they can be learned step by step and then rewarding each step visibly and consistently. These measures often create more purposeful behaviors and long term…

Self defeating behaviour could be described as behaviour that when compared to other possible courses of action, it is never the best possible action for that individual. A self defeating behaviour will at some point have been used successfully as a coping strategy to get through a difficult situation. This course of action is then stored in the subconscious by that individual as something that ‘worked’ and therefore the behaviour will be re-produced again in times of perceived trouble.…

Throughout the world there are many different views on the use of swear words in everyday life. From evening family slot times to late night tv shows, cursing in society is slowly becoming part of our “normal” day to day language. Whether or not it is accepted is something different. Society has often labeled swearing one of two things: as an extreme type of language only used by the uneducated or the greatest use of power words that should be used by any and all people. Though swearing is offensive to many, it is proven to be a major extension of our vocabulary and should be tolerated and understood to a greater extent.…

According to Layton (2013), “…the best way to increase the chances of overcoming a hoarding problem is to catch it in its early stages” (para. 19). It is ideal for a loved one of a hoarder to detect the problem. In worse situations, it may be a landlord finding the problem. There are many ways for hoarders to get help. Therapy is one option. Frost and Steketee (2010), both professors of psychology, did a therapy outcome study for hoarders. After only twelve of their therapy sessions, hoarders significantly improved and by the end of twenty-six treatment sessions, more than two-thirds had responded to treatment and 80 percent described themselves as much or very much improved. This shows that simple therapy can cause a great outcome Hoarding can be described as keeping items that have little to no value and not being able to get rid of them because of an attachment. This can get way out of the hand. Hoarding can get very dangerous. People have become aware of hoarding from TV. It is argued whether hoarding is a mental disorder. People are not hoarders from the day they are born, although, it is proven to have a brain abnormality. Hoarding can ruin someone’s life but overcoming it can also save many lives. Compulsive hoarding not only affects the hoarder’s mental, emotional, and physical health, but also their loved ones’. Hoarding is a devastating disorder but can be overcome.…
