Britain was highly dependent on imported goods and there was an allied struggle to maintain Britain's supply and the Axis attempt to cut the flow of merchant shipping, which enabled Britain to keep fighting. Therefore, they used torpedos to sink convoys and merchant ships and then went under to water to ensure that there was no counter attack if the convoys were to be escorted by waships In order to find out the plans of the enemy, the British needed the wiring of the special naval enigma rotors and the desolation of one of their U boats provided them with the information. Therefore recovering this material allowed them to be able to read all German U boat traffic.
