Carl overcomes some rasping stages in his life; everyone would make fun of him about his appearance and his weight. He wasn’t too confident in himself. For example his aunt Beryl always made fun of him: “you’ve got pale skin same as all the other matts”, he shrugged, said nothing, and stared at his arms and thighs the colour of rare meat. p. (21). However as the novel proceeds, Carl realises his more confident in himself and feels free when he starts working …show more content…
at the barge. For example how he felt happy when he was sitting on the barge: “Carl slumped against the hull, shivering in the evening breeze. He was exhausted but happier than he’d been since he arrived to Wattle beach, happier than he’d been since his mother disappeared”. P. (81). Carl succeeds in believing in himself and finds how to see the confidence in him.
When Skip Duncan had seeked Carl to work at the barge, Carl instantly accepted the job offer that he just received. For example when skip asked Carl for the job offer: “could you start tomorrow”? Skip asked. “Anytime. Now if you like”. The man laughed. “You’re keen, I’ll give you that”. When Carl found out that skips barge was being bankrupt by Mr Lovell’s barge “Wattle lady”, he wanted to do something about it. Carl thought of a sensible idea, he thought of an amazing idea that when the cars arrive on the barge Carl would rinse the salt off under the passenger’s cars, which will save the passengers time and money. For example when Carl was explaining to skip what the idea was: “i was rinsing the salt off them. They won’t have to do it themselves then, saves them a job. If i do it on every trip back from the island, people will hear about it and travel with us because they’ll get a free rinse on the way back”. P. (79). In fact when Carl had hang the poster that said, “Free carwash, Red barge”, there was immediate impression and everyone was boarding the Red barge. For example: “the signs had an immediate effect and once again skips barge kept pace with “Wattle lady” through the morning. Word spread like seeds on the wind”. P. (80). Carl succeeds at working at the barge after a long day. Skip Duncan is impressed at what he and Carl had achieved. Carl also succeeded at what could have been a disaster for Skip and Joy Duncan.
At the end of the novel Maddie decides to change and moves on.
She breaks up with her boyfriend Nathan trelfo because he had no respect to Maddy’s friends and especially her and how he spoke to Carl when he was blocking Maddie and Nathans way to get out which she wasn’t impressed with. For example: “you fat boy. You’re going to stop as leaving are you”? P. (174). When Nathan thought that if he could speak to Carl like that Maddie wouldn’t care but she actually did. For example: “come with me Maddie, we don’t have to stay here with this lot, I’m not coming she replied”. Carl knew he wasn’t the only one changing as well. Carl also sees himself liking Justine. For example when he reached and grabbed Justine’s hand: “her hand lay free by her thigh and Carl reached for it. He decides that Justine’s blush was the most luminous red in creation. She didn’t just colour in the face but along her arms, to the tips of her ears. Everywhere”. P. (182). Carl succeeds in standing up for Maddie and also showing his feeling towards
Justine.
