In one particular part of the scene Amir is talking about the Quran; he states that it says if a woman doesn't obey her husband he is allowed to beat her. When bringing it up Amir uses it as a point to justify why he doesn't want to follow the religion. On the contrary, once he finds out that Emily and Isaac were having an affair he slaps her around.Because of this Emily ultimately leaves him, and asks for a divorce; leaving Amir time to self-reflect on his actions for months with Emily moving out. Months later with this being the first time seeing Emily, he tries to apologize and just have a conversation with her. Emily jumps at the sight of his touch and moves away from him everytime he keeps walking towards her. This moment forces Amir to take responsibility for his actions, and face that he has become exactly what he didn't want to be. Another moment where Amir has to face himself is when Jory tells him she's getting the promotion. Furthermore, Jory explains the reasoning for him not getting the promotion is because of lying saying that he is of Indian descent.
