Bright Lights Big City Analysis
What defines who we are? Andre Breton narrator and writer of the book Nadja explores the notion of how the city depicts identity. Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney similarly considers the aspects of the city that converges to the development of identity. This paper will argue and compare how Paris and New York City shape and challenge the identity of the narrators through ghostliness, and the uncanny. Breton writes about his experiences in Paris, what he values about the city, the artists, writers and the woman who he briefly had a relationship with, Nadja. Specifically Breton, tries to fathom who he is and why he exists, equally interested with whom he haunts. He believes that if he understands whom he haunts he would determine who …show more content…
Similarly, McInerney uses ghostly imagery throughout the city to illustrate Breton’s notion of “whom do I haunt.” Both writers mention both Paris and New York City and how the cities influences the identity of the characters. This questions the similarities and differences of Paris and New York City and how cities influence identity. Therefore this paper examines how two different cities, Paris and New York City influence identity. Andre Breton’s “Nadja” depicts how the past through ghostly undertones of Paris shape the self. On the contrary McInerney’s “Bright lights, Big city” explores how New York city influences the narrator to overcome challenges of the past which results the change in identity. Bright Lights, Big City being “also hauntological and as such it is both uncanny and spectral” (Belville, 2). Belville suggests that if a work presents a haunting and ghostly aspects it is equally portrayed as the uncanny, that Breton applies in his work. In McInerney the mannequin conveys an important aspect of the identity, the narrator found this haunting comforting when he became familiar with it. Moreover the challenges arises when the mannequin is removed the narrator describes that, “ You cross the street to the to the third window down from the uptown corner. The mannequin is gone. You count windows again...yet you are unsettled now that it is gone.” The uncanny of the once familiar becomes unfamiliar and creates an unsettling feeling and creates a question of why did the mannequin become a place of comfort?     Soon after re-entering Harlem with an awareness of the Absurd, the narrator dons green-tinted sunglasses and a hat. In doing so, he accidentally assumes the identity of a con artist named Rinehart, who has multiple identities within the city. His experience as Rinehart undermines his idealistic faith because he is forced to confront the existence of a man who has found an identity through absolute freedom and deception. It brings him to a realization of the freedom of action he could have without a devotion to the Absurd. The narrator reflects, “The world in which we lived was without boundaries”; he also sees the inadequacy of faith in the Brotherhood’s rhetoric: “What did their theory tell them of such a world?” (498).     If an individual has a high admiration for their home, whether it’s in the heart of a bustling city or the far reaches of a quite country town, that individual has most certainly dealt with the burden of lending a piece of their sanctuary, and what constructs it, to the passing tourist. Spending a weekend in a particular city or place usually does not give the common vacationist or sight-seer the true sense of what natives feel constitutes their special home. In Andrei Codrescu’s New Orleans, Mon Amour, the author feels his city under attack from the tourists escaping their realities for a Mardi Gras fantasy that much of “America” associates New Orleans with. By definition, Codrescu is not a true native himself, being born in Romania and moving to New Orleans in his adulthood. However, like many other people, Codrescu was able to understand the beauty of New Orleans as something more than a “cheap trick”, and has become one of the many “people who never left” (Codrescu, 69). Now considering himself a New Orleanian, Codrescue does not criticize all tourism, but directs his angst at the vacationers who leave their true identities at home and travel to the city “to get drunk, to get weird, and to get laid” (148). Throughout the novel, the author depicts his home as a historical city filled with “the dead” and their vast cemeteries and stories, yet at the same time a flesh city, ruled by “dreams, masques, and shifting identities” (66, 133). Codrescue’s artistic, intricate depiction of New Orleans serves to show what is at stake for him and his fellow citizens. New Orleans is “for a specific life-form, a dreamy, lazy, sentimental, musical one” (135), not the loud and obnoxious weekenders that threaten to threaten the city’s identity. Codrescu’s attack on the “outsiders” of his city may seem a bit too critical of people looking for a short New Orleans visit. His main goal is not to condemn all…
