Brown Lable ATMs (BLAs) and White Lable ATMs (WLAs)

What are Brown Label ATMs

Description and Meaning of Brown Label ATMs :

'Brown label' ATM are those Automated Teller Machines where hardware and the lease of the ATM machine is owned by a service provider, but cash management and connectivity to banking networks is provided by a sponsor bank whose brand is used on the ATM.
The `brown label' has come up as an alternative between bank-owned ATMs and 'white label' ATMs. As in India white label ATMs were not allowed by RBI (in February, 2012, RBI has issued the draft guidelines for introduction of white ATMs, but final approval has yet to come.), the concept of Brown Label ATMs started picking up.

What is the Status of Brown label ATMs in India :

In view of the high cost of ATM machines and RBI's guidelines for expansion of ATMs, the concept of Brown Label ATM network is likely to expand at a brisk pace in next few years. In the recent years, there is a visible shift in the way banks look at the ATM business. From the earlier model where banks used to buy outright the ATM machines and bear the cost of service, they are now preferring brown label ATMS i.e. where the machine and service is outsourced. There are indications that as many as 50% may soon be under this category.
However, after approval of white label ATMs, the bankers will review the expansion model for their ATMs.

The task of these machines is to learn what each customer wants to do with their money and, to the extent that it is possible, act on what the customer wants (for example, ATMs can hand out cash). Customers can always know how much money they have in their accounts, and they are confident that the numbers they see in their bank statements and on their computer screens accurately reflect the number of dollars that they can get from the bank on demand. They can be so sure of this that they can accept those numbers in the same way they accept paper banknotes (this is similar to the way people started accepting paper dollars when they had been accepting gold or…

DRG regulation results in shrinking the Potential Industry Earnings (PIE) in the medical supplies industry. Prior to the DRG regulation, hospitals didn’t care about costs that were incurred in treating Medicare patients since the U.S. government was footing the bill for all the costs related to serving those patients. This allowed hospitals to not think about price while choosing the medical supplies. Hence BD could charge premium prices based on just their brand recognition without having to compete on price. However with the DRG regulation, U.S. government will not pay unlimited amount towards cost anymore, but pay based on regional and national costs for each diagnostic-related groups (DRG). As some hospitals get more efficient, it will put a pressure on the less efficient ones and force them to get efficient. Also, in the interim when hospitals are trying to achieve efficiency, they pass on the excess cost to the patients, who are not able to afford the sudden increase in their medical bills. As a result, the number of hospital admissions is on the decline as well as the average length of a patient’s hospital stay. Also, Medicare patients become more cost conscious of their treatments and would agree only to the blood tests that they absolutely need. All this together indirectly results in hospitals not needing as many medical supplies as before causing them to order fewer quantities to save on inventory holding costs. As a result the PIE shrinks even further, but the number of products in the market remains the same. Hence the medical supply companies, try to compete on price in order to reduce their inventory and increase their market share to get to the same amount of earnings as before the regulation.…

The major factor which has propelled the growth of the business correspondent industry in India is the financial inclusion mandate set by the Reserve Bank of India for banks to extend banking services to the unbanked population in the country. Banks in India are therefore increasingly focusing on expanding their geographic coverage and providing customers multiple product offerings through business correspondents. The no frills accounts offered by BCNMs are utilized majorly for G2P payments while the remittance services are used by the out-migrant population. The RBIs approval for interoperability is also expected to consolidate the BCNM model in near future as it will help them widen their product portfolio by offering different products and services to their customers from different partner banks as well as in diversifying the risk. The various entities which are playing the role of a business correspondent include Sections 25s, NGOs, MFIs, retailers, village grocers and others. However, the business correspondents also face challenges such as large number of dormant savings account and low commissions from banks. Despite of this, BCNMs have emerged as a strong channel for domestic money transfer or remittances in India in recent years. The contribution of the BCNMs in the total remittances through banks in India increased from just 4.0% in FY’2008 to around 30.0% in FY’2013.…
