Browning and Tennyson
John Keats (1795-1821) TO AUTUMN. 1. SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells. 2. Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store? Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind; Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep, Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press, with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours. 3. Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,— While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

"What you see and hear depends a good deal on where you are standing; it also depends on what sort of person you are." That famous quote from the writer C. S. Lewis reveals the main difference between Annie Dillard's and John James Audubon's essays dealing with birds- their perspective. Dillard's comes from that of a writer and a wordsmith, contrasting with Audubon's of a noted scientist and ornithologist. In the passages, both are describing almost the same scene- watching a flock of birds cross the sky- but their portrayals of the event are disparate in how they choose to describe the birds and what effect the scene has on the writers.…

The policemen of Reserve Battalion 101 did meet their end and consequences. After Hitler committed suicide and the Allied officially ended the war in Europe, many of the policemen returned to their prewar occupations. Some of them, such as Hoffman and Wohlauf, remained in the police career while others were able to find postwar jobs. But, none of them were able to live freely as they were before World War II. Being on of the battalion that killed many Jews, they got interrogated and tried. Some policemen and Major Trapp all charged against their crime of killing seventy-eight Poles during their killing period and sentenced to death and executed while some got thrown into jail from three or more years (144). Around late 1962 and early 1967, most of the former members of the battalion got interrogated as well. Consequently, most of them ended up in jail for more than five years while only a few lucky ones did not go to…

The poem begins by undercutting the beautiful, pleasant imagery promised by the title through the terse bluntness of the “dusk, and cold.” Flowers are indeed present as the title suggests, but only “frail, melancholy” ones, gathered by the subservient act of “kneeling” among “ashes and loam”. There is a definite sense of ending – both of the day, and of something grander. The persona’s attempts at engaging with the natural world are crudely rebuffed – she cannot succeed in her musical engagement, merely “try”, which results only in an “indifferent” blackbird “fret[ting] and strop[ing]” under “Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky.” This unfriendly environment in which the poem begins foregrounds the sense of loss which characterises so much of Harwood’s poetry, an inevitable, confronting finality emphasised by the bluntness of the language and plethora of full stops. The adult world presented here is one of uncertainty, difficulty and ambiguity.…

Wars pre-1914 were very different to WW1. Wars such as the Boer War and the Crimean War were fought by soldiers using mainly sabres and muskets. These wars had little in the way of powerful weaponry such as heavy weight machine guns. WW1 also saw the beginning of trench warfare, tanks, planes and gases.…

The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson speaks the poem “the charge of the light brigade” with many themes in mind, but the main themes that are best portrayed are honor, and death. The poem talks about a British brigade consisting of 600 men, with only horses and swords. They charge a Russian unit knowing that this mission might be their last. We can infer that the poet Alfred lord Tennyson has these two themes in the poem based on the details provided by the poem “The Charge of the Light brigade”, and the poem as a whole.…

There are three different kinds of questions: Description, prediction, and explanation. Description tells asks what happens, prediction asks when does this happen, and explanation asks why does this happen. According to Bradbury and Karney (2014), "These three different questions help motivate most research on intimate relationships" (p.36). This discussion post wants to know my researchable question, which is During what age would you consider most individuals find their intimate partner? Why? My question would more than likely fall under the descriptive type of question. "Description questions this determines what happens, which is usually what a lot of research questions are based on" (Bradbury & Karney, 2014, p.36). Also, I used an open-ended…

It has always appeared to be fact that sin was an easy word to define and that merely doing anything that goes against God and his teachings is a sin. In order to avoid sin, one must possess an infinite amount of faith and be able to follow the teachings of a master that one can 't always see, but needs to understand is always there. In literature, many works have been created dealing with faith and sin, but most are usually not written from a perspective in which a sinning man does not seek redemption. Most stories are not allegories dealing with a man leaving his wife – named Faith – so that he can go off into the woods and, literally, dance with the devil. Most stories, however, are not Young Goodman Brown and most are not written by Nathaniel Hawthorne as a response to the guilt he felt over being the descendant of people involved in the Salem Witch trials. An immensely important part of this allegory is the character of Faith, Young Goodman 's wife, who represents just what her name says, and how her character affects the entire story. Her existence alone allows for the crisis Young Goodman Brown feels and even later further enhances that same crisis. She is both the cause and solution to all of Brown 's problems, if only he would allow himself to accept his faith rather than enter into the kingdom of the devil.…

The presentation of war in the poems written by Odin and Alfred Lord Tennyson compared to poems written by Wilfred Owen is vastly different. Both shed vastly different light on the subject of one dying for his country. The main fundamental ideological difference of the two given poems by Odin and Tennyson is that they believe when one dies in war, they should be honored and celebrated, and it should be considered a glorious death, while Wilfred Owen believes a death in war is an unnecessary disgrace that should have been prevented in the first place.…
