Buchanan High School Reflection
Many believe that our education systems fails to provide students with skills and abilities that are applicable in real world situations, and if students only mindlessly went to class everyday, then I would agree with them. Fortunately, the Clovis school district has encouraged their students to participate in activities outside of the classroom, and this is where I have learned the most. I have learn how to work hard and study by taking seven different advance placement class and six different honors classes, but I have also learned how to lead and communicate by being the President of the Band at Buchanan high school. I have been taught all the necessary subjects and I have passed those classes, but I have learned how to push myself intellectually and apply my knowledge in Mock Trial where I was an attorney for the Buchanan team. I have learned how to persevere by training for a Half-Marathon outside of school. If I only ever went to class my communication, leadership, and people skills would not be as developed. Being a section leader for the band and then the President of the band …show more content…

I have a twin brother with autism who has influenced my life more than anyone. I have served at six different family retreats for people impacted by disability, and I recently finished helping put on a prom for those with disability who are unable to attend your average high school prom. Having a brother with autism and working with those who are disabled has taught me patience, understanding, and acceptance. It has helped me realize how lucky we are to be able to accomplish everyday tasks, and it has inspired me to pursue a career in Genetic Counseling, where I can help families who will eventually be impacted by disability process that information. Giving to and serving these people has given me lessons I will never forget, and I have learned that serving is the most rewarding form of

Individuals tend to view those with autism as people who will cause harm or violence towards them. Today I interviewed Rudy Castillo, my older brother who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. He currently attends Lipscomb University and plans to major in Business Administration. Despite his condition, Rudy has managed to do most of the same things as other students. For example, when in middle and high school, he played soccer and basketball.…

I think that I owe most of my improvement the BRHS Marching Band. Being a part of an activity that demands you to be the best you can and then some made me feel like I was not a new student. Marching Band taught me a lesson that most people learn when they get to college, time management. “If you are on time, you are late, if you are early you are on time, and if you are late, get ready to run laps.” I have this posted on my bedroom door to remind me that time management is a key life lesson. Balancing the demanding schedule of band and school taught me to not procrastinate. It has also showed me that when you work at something really hard, there is not one thing that can stand in your way when you reach to grab it. I still remember the moment I heard the announcer say the name of our school at the state competition. I can’t describe the excitement I had when I heard that we beat…

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

School is a place where I’m supposed to learn about how to deal with life outside of school, but in reality a lot of what I learn is no use to me in real life. I’ll never have to graph a polynomial function outside of algebra class, and I’ll never have to explain to someone how to figure out the count of valence electrons in Oxygen. Outside of school, however, I do learn about things useful to me. Like how to communicate with others, or how I can survive on my own without having to be dependent on someone else. School has ceased to be about learning, now it’s all about memorizing material for a test and…

Which I seem to have learned somewhere along the line of my 18 years in the “sanctuary” of school. Everyday, mind numbing work, just to be able to combine words into an essay which will not affect my life anymore than the two minutes I spend worrying about which grade I got. Seven hours of interaction with people I do not dislike, but do not have a particular fondness for either. I could be sitting at home doing something important, or maybe just rotting my brain in a more enjoyable fashion. I learned much from school, but how much will I actually need when I come into the world of important deadlines which determine the state of my employment and possibly even the state of my family.…

High school classes might have seemed better in the past compared to college. You might feel more comfortable in smaller classes than you would heading off to university, but that is simply from the comfort of your surroundings. You are familiar with your teachers and your closest friends are always by your side. This might create a friendlier environment, but branching away from the only things you have ever known will help you grow as an individual. Leaving home to start your life as an adult can be tough; however, learning every day responsibilities and making new relationships are two things that will benefit anyone who is getting ready to enter the “real world.” Students benefit more from college classes over high school classes because they learn responsibilities and create new relationships which help them to gain independence.…

Therefore, I decide that I had to work twice or three times as much as other kids in my grade just to earn a decent grade. My failures taught me that sometimes we have to give up friend, family, and my spare times to work on homework and study extra for all of my class.I came home everyday to look at my notes and study with my sister for hours until I was sure I knew what I was doing. I learned that having a disability doesn’t make me any less smarter than other people. Soon after, I learned how to speak, write and read English. because of all of the effort I put into learning soon after, I was mastering all of my class. Getting Student of the Month three times in a row, most outstanding student, as well as most improved student. I liked earning all of this awards because it told me that my hard work did pay off. When I finally went into High School I decided it was time to drop out of Study Skills because I knew I was ready to do school all on my own.…

Education has always been one of the most important things to me, and I am dedicated to learn as much as humanly possible. Throughout my high school career I have challenged myself by completing six advanced placement classes and taking other honors classes. I have taken these classes as a way to help guide myself for what is to come in the future in college. I was inducted into the National Honors Society during my junior year of high school, and I graduated with honors. Both of these successes are the two greatest accomplishments of my high school career. These two achievements prove how dedicated I was, and still am, to getting the best education I could. Individually, I have always had a passion for helping out those with mental disabilities. The main avenue I try to apply this passion is through the Special Olympics. I have volunteered throughout high school and every year the experience seems to become more rewarding. Upon arriving to the games, each volunteer student is assigned a "buddy" to escort to all the events and activities throughout the day. Both of the buddies that I have had the privilege of escorting in high school (Taylor and Jason) were amazing individuals to be around. Perhaps the best part of the day is first meeting your buddy and seeing the look of pure joy in their eyes of making new friend. This passion is unconditional as the buddies do not care about the volunteers’…

My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects. It just reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to help other, despite the time it takes to do so.
