Burroway Summary

Burroway’s workshop piece explains to newly writing critics that phrasing is everything. While work shopping we shouldn’t be so critical and overly opinionated. She points out that this doesn’t seem natural at all because we are so used to “judging art.” Although it seems very much out of the comfort zone, working on feedback does help the writing and writers in general. Being too critical can insult the writer and not help them, so choosing different wording can deliver the same message without sounding harsh. Workshop is supposed to expand the writer’s options and help them better their stories. The best workshops take time and are prepared before discussion. Burroway also states that the story is under discussion not the writer, which we
probably would’ve done without thinking. While criticism can be as easy as I don’t like the whole story or I do, workshop is more than that. There is no disregarding a story, all stories will be appreciated and helped. As the writer we should accept opinions and stay with an open mind, while the best writers are the ones who take others opinions into consideration.
