The purpose of this campaign is to:
Educate public about the adverse effects of plastic bags on the environment- made from petroleum, creates pollution, depletes natural resources, fatal consumption by animals, high costs in the long run to clean up litter, non-biodegradable
Provide ways for public to make a difference- reduce, reuse, recycle! Activism!
Inform public with most updated information about the anti-plastic issues
Communicate with the public one-on-one to promote grass root organization
Short term goal is to reduce, reuse, and recycle but in the long run hope to achieve a zero waste policy.
Plastic bags were first introduced in 1957 as sandwich bags, department stores began using them in the 70s and supermarkets in the 80s.
Today, 380 billion single-use plastic bags are used in the US each year, that's 12 millions barrels of oil!
Only 1-2% of these bags are recycled every year.
Plastic is the #1 most abundant ocean litter.
1 million birds and thousands of marine animals die each year due to plastic ingestion/suffocation.
The largest opponents to a plastic bag ban are those from the petroleum and plastic industries.
1 reusable bag can replace 500 plastic bags in one year. Paper is also an issue, as 10 billion paper bags are used in the United States annually, requiring 14 millions trees.
Portland, Westport, Seattle, North Carolina, San Francisco (the first US city to ban in 2007), San Jose, LA, and a few others currently have approved a ban/tax on single-use plastic bags.
Will New York be next??
