ANTI PLASTIC CAMPAIGN

The purpose of this campaign is to:
Educate public about the adverse effects of plastic bags on the environment- made from petroleum, creates pollution, depletes natural resources, fatal consumption by animals, high costs in the long run to clean up litter, non-biodegradable
Provide ways for public to make a difference- reduce, reuse, recycle! Activism!
Inform public with most updated information about the anti-plastic issues
Communicate with the public one-on-one to promote grass root organization
Short term goal is to reduce, reuse, and recycle but in the long run hope to achieve a zero waste policy.

Plastic bags were first introduced in 1957 as sandwich bags, department stores began using them in the 70s and supermarkets in the 80s.
Today, 380 billion single-use plastic bags are used in the US each year, that's 12 millions barrels of oil!
Only 1-2% of these bags are recycled every year.
Plastic is the #1 most abundant ocean litter.
1 million birds and thousands of marine animals die each year due to plastic ingestion/suffocation.
The largest opponents to a plastic bag ban are those from the petroleum and plastic industries.
1 reusable bag can replace 500 plastic bags in one year. Paper is also an issue, as 10 billion paper bags are used in the United States annually, requiring 14 millions trees.
Portland, Westport, Seattle, North Carolina, San Francisco (the first US city to ban in 2007), San Jose, LA, and a few others currently have approved a ban/tax on single-use plastic bags.
Will New York be next??
What you can do…
Quit accepting plastic bags and other single-use plastics and encourage friends to do the same.
Register in support of a plastic bag ban in NY.
Come to City Hall Tuesday, August 20th 10:30 to rally against plastic bags with Surfrider and other environmental groups.
Get the conversation going – use your social networks to spread the word about a possible plastic bag ban in NY.

In 2012, Americans alone produced over 250 million tons of garbage. One large component of this waste consisted of oil based plastic bags, which are utilized excessively by grocers, restaurants, and stores nationwide. In order to reduce this source of waste, many countries are banning plastic bags or taxing customers for their use. Utilizing at least two scholarly sources, discuss at least two environmental problems caused by such extensive plastic bag use? If you were in charge what plan might you propose to reduce or eliminate their use? Discuss the economic impacts of implementing your plan versus the financial impacts of making no change in our current use.…

There are many communities, groups and people spend their time advocating how plastic bags damage the environment. For instance, Californians Against Waste, a non-profit organization founded in 1977, strives to prevent pollution and protect California’s environment many years. They sponsored and help complete almost all of California’s predominant recycling legislations. Recently, they have succeeded in contributing in exposing the plastic bag ban in public. They will keep on preventing plastic bags pollution, and they want to make sure the ban will be effective in California State. Not only do people stop producing plastic bags will impact the economy, the pollution they produce will also affect the economy. California Agasint Waste concludes that single-use plastic bags cost taxpayers money to clean up. They state that California spends around $34.2 million to $107 million every year to prevent people from littering plastic bags into the waters (“The Problem with Plastic Bags”). It is weird that people spend the money producing plastic bags to earn more; at the same time, they spend money again dealing with their disposal. Such huge amount of money can be invested into other fields to make society better, such as inventing new materials to decompose plastic bags faster. However, people are indifferent to the disastrous effect. Overall, there are hundreds of groups gather together to…

First, there is no mechanism or law to reinforce the use of reusable bags. For example, local governments seem reluctant to develop policy that will discourage the use of plastic bags. In order to reduce the impact of plastic bags, local governments must take some measure that will discourage the use of plastic bags. For example, in Singapore, Shoppers needing a plastic bag are encouraged to donate 10 cents towards the Singapore Environment Council to help finance its environmental activities. Shoppers are also encouraged to decline bags when making small purchases ( Civil Service College, 2014). Second, most supermarkets still provide plastic bags at no cost. Third, there is a lack of public awareness on the impact of plastic bags on the environment. As most of the participants noted during the our campaign. In response to this, I wrote a poem about the impact of plastic…

Plastic has an abundant amount of uses in daily life. Whether someone knows it or not, plastic is prevalent in everyday objects: containers, computer screens, and even DVDs. One of the main uses of plastic is in bags, and people use them for everything, from carrying lunch to lugging groceries. Although they are an ingenious invention, there are also many negative effects associated with plastic bags, as they are not biodegradable. These types of bags are made from natural gas and petroleum and plastic bags crowd landfills and pollute oceans and lakes (Cho). This pollution takes away from the beauty of the outdoors and the greatness of a city. Many states and nations have a ban on plastic bags, should Michigan do the same? Michigan should ban…

We 're treating the oceans like a trash bin: around 80 percent of marine litter originates on land, and most of that is plastic. Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation. Scientists are investigating the long-term impacts of toxic pollutants absorbed, transported, and consumed by fish and other marine life, including the potential effects on human health.…

A few months ago, when I was in Montreal, I was surprised to see that in some grocery stores plastics bags were sold. It is something new because two years ago when I lived in this city, they were free. Now, people need to bring their own reusable bags or buy a plastic bag for 20 cents. Banning grocery plastics bags in Montreal is the city plan as well as some cities in the United States already doing. The aim of this new recycling program is to protect the environment. I believe that recycling is not always effective in some aspects, but it is still the first step that people can do to fight earth’s contamination.…

    Ban Plastic or Not

    * The effects of plastic bags on the environment are really quite devastating. While there are many objections to the banning of plastic bags based solely on their convenience, the damage to the environment needs to be controlled. * There is no way to strictly limit the effects of plastic bags on the environment because there is no disposal method that will really help eliminate the problem. While reusing them is the first step, most people either don't or can't based on store policies. They are not durable enough to stand up to numerous trips to the store so often the best that citizens can do is reuse them when following pooper scooper laws. * The biggest problem with this is that once they have been soiled the end up in the trash, which then ends up in the landfill or burned. Either solution is very poor for the environment. Burning emits toxic gases that harm the atmosphere and increase the level of VOCs in the air while landfills hold them indefinitely as part of the plastic waste problem throughout the globe. * Plastic Bag Litter * Even when citizens try to manage their plastic bag disposal wind plays a role in carrying them away as litter. This litter is not biodegradable and thus where it lands it tends to stay for long period of time. A bag that is eventually ripped to shreds from high winds or other factors doesn't disappear but instead is spread in smaller amounts throughout the area. This can cause more problems as these smaller pieces are carried away through storm drains and often end up in the waterways. * Plastic bag litter is often also the result of human laziness. The plastic bag might make for a good carry on to the beach for the day but once all of the pretzels and chips are consumed an estimated one in three consumers simply allow the bag to disappear into the wind and waves. * With more the 500 billion and possibly as many as a trillion plastic bags in circulation annually…

Pollution from plastic bags or bottles has involvement from the accumulated products made of plastic which in turn adversely affect the environment which consists of wildlife, and humans. It can affect lands, waterways like oceans and rivers. The biggest prominent factor for usage of plastic bags is due to inexpensiveness and durability of it, which automatically increases its usage among human beings. Since, most of the plastic bags are difficult to recycle; they land up on the water beds and affect the animal kingdom. Sea animals gobble up these plastics, which eventually goes in human stomach as humans consume these animals like fish.…
