The importance of budgeting
I developed a spreadsheet including three budget schedules of Spiffy Shade Corporation, which is Production Budget, Direct-labor Budget, and Manufacturing Over-head Budget. According to the budget schedules, the company can plan ahead and meet the needs of demand. For example, form the Production Budget, the company can plan how many sunglasses should be produced for each month and quarter. Budget can also facilitating communication and coordination, and allocate resources. For example, from the schedules, the company can allocate the funds to different departments based on the budget. It can improve the correctness of the company’s decision. In addition, budgeting can control profit and operations, for instance, the company can compare the actual sales for a period against its budget sales. This can help the company evaluate the firm’s effectiveness in selling sunglasses. Thus to provide incentives for people to perform well and to make maximum profit for the company.

Results of sensitivity analysis
I created three scenarios to the original data case. In scenario 1, I make sales volume increased by 10%, compared with making sales volume fell by 10%, and it turns out that 10% increase in sales units also increase the production cost, direct-labor cost and manufacturing over-head. As well, 10% decrease in sales will cause decreases in the company’s cost. In scenario2, the company changes the policy of the end-of-month inventory. It is obvious that it almost make no changes in all of the three kinds of costs. So a new inventory policy can be carried out to not increasing the costs and at the same time meet the market needs. In scenario3, I assume that employee medical insurance increases 5 times and not install the new equipment. From the budget schedules, it shows us that the direct-labor cost increases fiercely, but the manufacturing cost remains the same level. It indicated that new equipment helps a lot decrease

The success of the company depends on how well the planning is done. In this process the budgeted figures are compared with the actual figure. It seems that the fixed budgeted figures are compared with the actual budget without flexing it. Therefore there is a problem with the company’s employee. It seems that the focus is on the dollar amount not on the volume of the goods is being produced. For example, the company has set target of 2000 units with fixed cost of $20000 and variable cost of $60000. It means that the total budgeted cost is $80000. It is compared with the actual figures without looking at the volume. Now suppose that the actual cost incurred is $90000 and the volume is 2500 units. If $90000 is compared with $80000, it looks that the spending is more by $10000, which is wrong. Because the actual cost should have been spent for 2500 units is $20000 fixed and $75000 for variable, therefore the flexible budget for actual volume should be $95000. Now compare it with $90000, which shows there is saving of $5000 not overspending of $10000. It means that overspending always is not a bad…

Once I finished reviewing the Accounting Memo sent to Andrew and team mates. I found several items that need to be changed in order to be re-directed to the Chief Financial Officer. This memo was written very informal since this was directed to a fellow team mate. All formal method of communication need to write out the entire word. In this case the word memo was abbreviated instead of writing out memorandum. There is no abbreviation and always use complete sentences. Rewording the memorandum and reorganizing the words will make a more complete and will cost no confusion to the reader. Example, for this memo, “We will have a meeting this Wednesday to discuss the Last In/First Out versus First In/First Out methods and the cost of goods. The Chief Financial Officer will need to present this information to the company’s president and board later this month.” Now the second paragraph could start by saying, “In order to continue reducing our federal and state taxes we recommend to continue with the use of LIFO. This way we can avoid getting to any inflationary economic issues. The abbreviations once again are used with P&L. The entire word Profit & Loss Statements needs to be written out to avoid confusion. The two bullet points are incorrect as noted. We could replace both bullet points by making to two complete sentences. Final paragraph has no relation to the entire memorandum. There is no need to talk about other companies that do not have any relation to our concerns. This memo was written without taking into consideration the audience. Memorandums weather informal or formal need to be written in a professional format. This is regardless who the audience might be. Many times memorandums are sending as a group message and this could include coworkers, upper level managers or even the CFO and the company’s president.…

Budgets are planning and control tools for management and, therefore, help to make proactive decisions about business. Being a financial instrument budget includes all revenues and expenditures and provides spending guidelines for the manager as well as sets performance expectations. Guillermo can use budgets to compare his alternatives and carefully examine all avoidable and unavoidable costs. The key to determining the financial difference between alternatives is to identify the differential costs and revenues. (Horngren et al, 2008) The differential costs and revenues analysis is called incremental analysis. By examining all the relevant costs and revenues Guillermo can decide which alternative to choose and, therefore, to obtain the greatest contribution possible. The company will use the contribution to pay the unavoidable costs. The unavoidable costs will remain the same regardless of any decision, so the key is picking the alternative that will contribute the most toward paying off these costs. (Horngren et al, 2008)…
