Labor Laws and Unions The assignment of the paper is to choose an organization, which is unionized and recognize some of the compliance and process of the organization. Therefore, the name of the organization is Starbucks, which is specialized in coffee, tea, and spices. The process of this paper will focus on the unionization of Starbucks such as growth, legal issues with federal and state laws in running a union, and possibility of any litigation. There will be other areas that will be addressed such as benefits of being a union, the process, bargain procedures, and the effects of a union on Starbucks.
Background
Meanwhile, Starbucks has been in the retail industry since1971 with one store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market (Starbucks, 2011). The mission of Starbuck is to produce the best product in the coffee industry, and the vision was to setup retail stores across the country. Starbucks timeline of retail stores are from 1971 thru 2010 with setup in the United States and various International companies (Starbucks, 2011). In addition Starbucks has partnered with other entities and accrued numerous of sponsorships with investors. Based on this information and builder process, Starbucks has implemented a union program for employee to have an opportunity to join. However, there were laws and regulation Starbuck has to follow when unionizing employees under the IWW Starbucks Workers Union.
Benefits
The benefit of joining Starbucks union program is to negotiate wages, hours, or issues that pertain to the organization or an employee. It has been proven that union has helped members to receive increase in pay, flexible scheduling of hours, workers compensation, and grievance process. There were others issues that were rectified by the IWW Starbucks Workers Union such as personal welfare, adequate healthcare benefits, and discrimination (Starbucks, 2011).
