Buzzwald: A Narrative Fiction
There once was a neighborhood named Buzz Village where all the friendly flies lived. Every fly was fun and friendly. The neighborhood was a fantastic place.

In this neighborhood, lived the Buzzwald family. The kids of the family played ball, and went on adventures. But there was one place they weren't able to explore.

On the end of the very last street of the neighborhood, there lay a home to a creepy family of spiders. The flies in Buzz Village were warned to never go near that home.

The Buzzwald children were playing hopscotch outside one day and noticed that the spider's house had a nice jungle gym. “Should we check it out?” asked Suzie Buzzwald.“Yes, let’s go!” said Flinn Buzzwald.

As they were walking up to the house, Poppa Buzzwald yelled “Stop! Why are you going

They were having a fun time until Suzie accidentally tossed the ball a little too hard. The ball went rolling, stopping at the yard of the creepy spiders.
“Let’s go get it,” said Flinn.
“Okay but we have to be really careful to not be caught by the creepy spiders!” said Suzie.
“Okay, let’s go” replied Flinn. And off they went.
They tiptoed quietly towards the spider's house. Moving nice and steady, Flinn goes to reach for the ball, when he accidentally steps on a squeaky toy lying in the grass. Suddenly, someone opens the front door.
The front door completely opens, and out comes the entire spider family. “Hello. We’re the Crawleys” said the father spider. “It’s nice to finally meet you”. The Buzzwald kids stood in shock. “Here, you should have your ball back!” said the mother spider.
“We thought that you weren’t nice. We’ve always been warned to not come here.” said Flinn.
“Yeah, a lot of people look at us and think we’re creepy and scary, but we’re really nice spiders.” said the father spider.
“We’re sorry we judged you before knowing you.” said Suzie.
“It’s okay. How about you bring your family for dinner?” said the mother

“Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

Wiley Mildred is an average family home in a quiet residential area in Victorville, CA. Upon arriving at the house I noticed the establishment had gates separating the front-yard and backyard that were securely locked and baby-proof. As I rang the door-bell I was greeted into the house with smiles and warm greetings. The director of the facilities name is Gloria, a Latina woman with a very thick accent; she had an assistant whose name was not given. Right away I was taken to the back-yard as it was “recess time.” Gloria’s backyard was very open and large it contained a grassy area, a woodchip area and a concrete area as well, in each area different toys and materials were in use. In the grassy area there were two smaller slides, small chairs, and many toys that children must use their fine motor skills to operate. In the woodchip area there were larger structures; my favorite was the teeter-totter in the shape of a plane that fit a total of six children. There were three different play structures of moderate sizes, some with slides and some with…

Toni Cade Bambara The puddle had frozen over, and me and Cathy went stompin in it. The twins from next door, Tyrone and Terry, were swingin so high out of sight we forgot we were waitin our turn on the tire. Cathy jumped up and came down hard on her heels and started tapdancin. And the frozen patch splinterin every which way underneath kinda spooky. “Looks like a plastic spider web,” she said. “A sort of weird spider, I guess, with many mental problems.” But really it looked like the crystal paperweight Granny kept in the parlor. She was on the back porch, Granny was, making the cakes drunk. The old ladle drippin rum into the Christmas tins, like it used to drip maple syrup into the pails when we lived in the Judson’s woods, like it poured cider into the vats when we were on the Cooper place, like it used to scoop buttermilk and soft cheese when we lived at the dairy. “Go tell that man we ain’t a bunch of trees.” “Ma’am?” “I said to tell that man to get away from here with that camera.” Me and Cathy look over toward the meadow where the men with the station wagon’d been roamin around all mornin. The tall man with a huge camera lassoed to his shoulder was buzzin our way. “They’re makin movie pictures,” yelled Tyrone, stiffenin his legs and twistin so the tire’d come down slow so they could see. “They’re makin movie pictures,” sang out…

Many locations within the game slow down progress and drawing location cards can send you back to earlier points on the board, often making the game seem to last forever (Kawash 10). This was not seen as a flaw, however, but a selling point: "Advertisements for the game like one published by Rogers Toy Store in Washington, D.C., promised parents that "this indoor game . . . will keep your youngsters happy for hours"'(Kawash 10). In other words, Candyland was, in a sense, the board game babysitter of Polio-stricken 50s America. The idea of outdoor play and playthings were seen as potentially dangerous, and the favored alternative for many parents was keeping children inside. None of these characteristics, nor the educational benefits, should come as a surprise, however, if one is aware of Candyland`s…
