CAS 100 Reflection
For these next two assignments I have some specific goals for what I wish to accomplish in paper. My main goals are to pick a topic that is original and actually controversial. In my CAS 100 class when the class was assigned with to do a policy speech I aimed to find a topic which I was fairly ignorant on, in order to challenge myself. I decided to chose the topic of gentrification, since I felt it was a topic that many, including myself, weren’t very aware of the occurrence. Others on the other hand decided to pick topics which were, in my opinion, a little too easy. Topics such as global warming can easily “persuade” an audience with, considering this is an overwhelmingly liberal college. Other topics like sex trafficking were too easy for
me, because who in the class is going to stand up and say “I am totally in support of sex trafficking.” I hate topics that are black and white, I want a topic that falls in the gray area. I want my controversial topic to be controversial. That being said, the topic I wish to select is Greek Life and whether or not they should be banned at Penn State.
I actually wanted to select this topic for my speech in CAS, but I lacked the courage to do select this topic. Even before attending college, I have always questioned the intentions of Greek Life. From their life-endangering and humiliating hazing rituals, to their misogynistic beliefs, I find no reason why they should exist anymore. I wholeheartedly believe that Greek Life should be abolished, and I will hopefully have the opportunity to articulate my thoughts on the matter. The abolishment of Greek Life is a very controversial subject, especially after the recent occurrence at Penn State, which will hopefully make for a good read. With such a divisive topic, both researching and writing will be absolutely exhilarating. At time where many in the class are likely considering joining a Frat/Sorority, this assignment could potentially persuade them to weigh their options, and decide if Greek Life is ultimately worth it.
