Elementary schools are looking for volunteers to help students with reading and math. I feel I could not only tutor the students, but lead them by example, befriend them and also instill values of NJHS by setting a good example. Last year, after the house explosion in Firestone, my friends and I held a lemonade stand to raise money for the affected families. We were able to raise over two hundred dollars. I feel that by taking the initiative to get out and help I can make a difference in my community.…

I hope you all are well. I originally sent out a letter asking for participants to be mentors in a project that I am expanded on from which I started back in 2009. I am a liitle surprised and disappointed in the lack of response of mentors for the project. I realize as professionals, many of you have programs and organizations that you all partner up with and do certain thing with to help the children but i have to honestly ask you if what you're doing is it a once a year thing for publicity or is it something that it's actually making a difference in sometimes life. I'm not taking about buying sometime a back pack for the first day of school and never knowing if they even go to school, or getting them a uniform a and you don't even know what school they do to our feeding the children and they are too engaged to pull out their isn't buyer and jelly sandwich next to sometime else chick file a. I'm talking about a keeping up with someone when the spotty light is off, the camera crew had left, when a school year is almost up and that child's is struggling to past the next assignment, when they are so distracted by social media and you can take out a few seconds of your busy schedule and say, hey kiid, I'm just checking on you to make sure your ok, making sure your still good on your grades, attendance and still working toward your career goals. Is there anything I can help you with? Just a simple meager like that to reach out each month to stay connected to your mentee. I'm asking if you can take out the time to join in with me for this purpose. I originally stated with the goal of housing this event on September 6, I've had to reschedule it for several reasons. You wouldn't believe all the word things that has tried to keep me from doing this event from people bashing out in me, greedy agents, sponsors sending fraud cashier checks, venue over booking, all kinds of madness. But what has mad me strive to do this event is not only am i using…

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students of different ethnicities, different socio-economic backgrounds and special education. I have also worked with high school students of various sexual orientations. Working with different people has shaped my identity by becoming aware that we are all different and that is what truly makes society beautiful. It has shaped my self-awareness by connecting me with my true desire in life. That is why I extremely passionate to help children and young adolescents achieve success. My experiences have broadened my understanding of the role in social work in society because I feel one can do so much for others. I have gained enough experience, which allows me to believe that I have the flexibility and adaptability to work with different populations. My previous experience has influenced my understanding of and commitment to social justice because it is sad to witness children with a 30,000-word gap deficit come into my classroom as opposed to children from higher social economic statuses who have a larger array of vocabulary. Then as they get older we see this gap widened regardless of ethnicity based on social economic status and students who are learning English as a second language. I want all children to have the same access to an amazing…
During the course of my high school career, I have developed a strong passion for the organization named the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that focuses on building students into better leaders for their families, careers, and communities. Furthermore, FCCLA teaches students practical skills that will be useful throughout their lifetimes. This organization has become an important part of my life because it has shaped me into the leader I am today. I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. My leadership experience in FCCLA, especially my experience as a member of the Missouri State…

Youth services is definitely an area that I am drown to having experience working with youths. My desire is for youths to have what I didn’t have support and someone to tell them they can do it and despite what society tells them they are beautiful. Being forced to do things I didn’t want to, bullied, survived depression and suicide. I think I have something to offer as I mentioned I was indeed colonized as in I believed that being white was normal and everything else is Ghetto; which also affected my esteem. I want to be an ally to youth mainly racialized and black youths to be specific help them to believe in themselves.…

Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…
Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…
I am also capable of being an honorable leader. I am trustworthy and responsible. If something is expected of me, I try my best to live up to the expectations and strive to do even better. During my years in high school, I have participated in many organizations and leadership programs such as the ELL Youth Advisory at Sociedad Latina, Chinese Immigrant Students Leadership (ChISL) and Youth Advisory Group at Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center). I was selected as a peer mentor in ChISL. With my leadership ability, my teammates and I made a short video clip and won the White House AAPI video contest called the “Champion of…
Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…
