Psy 270 Week 2 Health And Social Care Case Studies
1. When I was four years old my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My life changed completely after her diagnosis. My dad abandoned us. We could no longer afford to live by ourselves, since my mother could not work. She was disabled from her neck down. Immediately, she was hospitalized. A medical social worker carefully explained her disease so that we could better understand it. She was kind and patient with our Spanish only speaking family. Due to my mother’s health we were compelled to move in with my aunt. She raised me as if I was her own. During my childhood money was tight. My uncle would work two jobs just to make ends meet. My aunt would take us to a catholic center where social workers would provide us with food, gift cards …show more content…
I was confronted with an ethical conflict with a student. Bob (name has been changed) is a second grade boy with Emotional Disturbance. One morning during writing, Bob got upset because he did not want to write. I reminded him that he is in school to work hard. That it was not okay for him to refuse to work. I told him writing is really important and he is going to do it more in 3rd grade. I asked him to clip down for his behavior (behavior system) because he was not working hard, which breaks the school wide rule of making good choices. He was so upset that he pulled the bucket from my hand and hit me. I informed him that I understood that he was really upset and told him that that is definitely not the way to resolve a conflict. I reminded him that adults do not go around hitting one another because there are grave consequences for that type of action. I resolved the situation by reminding him to be mindful of his emotions and reminded him to breathe deeply to calm his heart rate. I gave him a break and then reminded him that when he is feeling really upset he needs to use his words so we can meet his needs. I gave him a referral. Even though I understand that the child has a difficult time dealing with emotions, I have provided strategies that can help him calm himself. He did not use them. I believe student safety comes first. I had a difficult time writing this referral because I know that sometimes he truly cannot control himself. But, I gave him a referral because …show more content…
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students of different ethnicities, different socio-economic backgrounds and special education. I have also worked with high school students of various sexual orientations. Working with different people has shaped my identity by becoming aware that we are all different and that is what truly makes society beautiful. It has shaped my self-awareness by connecting me with my true desire in life. That is why I extremely passionate to help children and young adolescents achieve success. My experiences have broadened my understanding of the role in social work in society because I feel one can do so much for others. I have gained enough experience, which allows me to believe that I have the flexibility and adaptability to work with different populations. My previous experience has influenced my understanding of and commitment to social justice because it is sad to witness children with a 30,000-word gap deficit come into my classroom as opposed to children from higher social economic statuses who have a larger array of vocabulary. Then as they get older we see this gap widened regardless of ethnicity based on social economic status and students who are learning English as a second language. I want all children to have the same access to an amazing

However, it actually turned out that I had more in common with my African-American roommate, who was also came from a low-income household in Southern California, than I did with my 3rd generation Mexican-American roommate who came from a middle-class suburban city. I had no idea the impact that different generations and cultural differences outside of race have the ability to make until I actually experienced it. Thanks to this experience, I feel my culturally competency expanded to new horizons. As a social worker, I plan to take what I have learned from my experience and education of the transcultural perspective that San Jose State’s mission has established and practice it with people I work with. This will be one of the many ways I plan on contributing to the profession to promote social justice as well as advocate for the communities who consistently face oppression and social…

These experiences helped me cope with my biggest tragedy, my father's death, a serious influential adversity for me to undergo. My dad is one of the closest and most important person in my life, he means the world to me. Our family, the Heng's, was complete until tragedy struck when my father passed last year. Since our father by left this world, and our mother is unemployed (widow, residing in Asia, and doesn’t speak English), I will be the head of the household, responsible for our family’s health and overall well being. Working hard to keep it healthy, growing, and prosperous. I am the oldest in my family, so I am also a role model to my siblings, providing an example for them to follow. To learn about family, respect, character, values/beliefs, confidence, culture, happiness, life lessons (good traits, bad traits, etc), education, advice/guidance, etc. My family depends on me, so I must serve and lead them well in order to live a good life, do things we never done and obtain things we never owned. My group members were familiar were familiar with cultural competency as well as being exposed to diversity through jobs and education. I also engage myself in my education and job opportunity with social competency however; I do feel that I need to progress in my cultural competency to better help my clients when I do become a social worker. That’s why I am in this class! I see myself with the role of being a student and teacher in cultural competency. I had the burden of worrying about losing my grandmother on my back and taking care of my grandfather. My priorities were always them. I went straight home after school every day to either visit my grandma or help around the house. This is something a lot of kids have to go through, sadly, so this situation probably doesn’t stand out. The thing is, I worked so hard to power through this. Sooner or later, my grandmother got better. I had just graduated from the group therapy program. My grandfather came to therapy with me sometimes so he could understand how I was feeling and understand how to help himself. I thought things would finally go back to what I considered “normal.”…
