Unit 1 Equality and Diversity

Level 4Theory assignment

Methodology

The aims and objectives of this unit are to show an understanding of the role of Equality and Diversity in education I have chosen to research and write about those areas that are relevant and appropriate to the work that I am doing, in order to improve my teaching practice. This hopefully means that the skills I have learned pertaining to research around the subjects will help to fill in any gaps in my knowledge as I continue to develop professionally.
The way in which I approached my research was to begin writing notes on all the information I already knew about each area. I then concentrated on the areas I had little or no knowledge about; I began to research using reference books, the internet and notes I had made previously from the CTTLS course. I made notes for each topic and referenced which books or website the information had been extracted from.

Meaning and benefits of diversity and the promotion of equality and how this can protect people from risk or harm

Equality and diversity can mean different things to different people and organisations. The term equality and diversity is defined best, in my opinion, as the prevention and elimination of discrimination between persons. I believe the importance of incorporating equality and diversity into the teaching and learning organisations is high as this will encourage minority groups to get involved. “Education and training providers should take account of learners’ circumstances and needs in helping them fulfil their potential”

Different events, venues and places can be researched in this way, large or very specific. Data such as gender, age, culture etc can be gathered using this method as well as the observation of venues such as clubs, shops, cafes etc.…

Promoting equality and diversity; equality is when you ensure individuals or those of a group are treated with respect and equally, meeting their needs such as the type of food they eat or if they practice their religion. Hence promoting equality and diversity means accepting a person even if they have differences such as Religion, gender, disability, age and belief etc., it’s important to accept it. For example, within a doctor’s surgery, it’s important the doctordoes not disrespect a patient because of who they are and where they are from. Promoting equality removes discrimination. 1.1 Diversity defines our visible and non-visible differences, which sets us apart from each other. It can include (but not exhaustive) differences in backgrounds, culture, personality, religion and belief, race, sexuality, language, disability, gender reassignment, sex, socio-economic status, ethnicity, political beliefs or other ideologies etc. Diversity encompasses recognition, acceptance and respect of our individual uniqueness and encourages the embracing and celebrating of our differences instead of merely tolerating them. Equality defines us all as having the same value regardless of our differences and creates a fairer society that allows everyone to participate and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential without the fear of discrimination. Inclusion ensures that our unique differences and equal rights within Diversity and Equality, are harnessed to create a sense of belonging, valued for who you are and feeling supported with energy and commitment from all those around you to create a collective success in the work place, the community and society in general.…
