Reagan starts off his Address to the Nation on Defense and National Security by introducing the subject of peace and National security as well as the importance of it. He claims that it is timely because it offers new hope for the children of the 21st century. Note that this is an example of pathos that Reagan uses to begin his method of swaying the audience. Reagan also claims that it is important because it is a decision the nation must make for themselves. He explains a solution he once and why it never came to pass to hint that even someone as influential as he was could not solve this alone.…
Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…
Over the course of the last two weeks, this class has discussed many topics. We have gone over the best ways of communication with staff, and the effectiveness of different techniques. We isolate which were the most important traits to possess, and how to best deal with employees who may possess traits that differ from our own.…
I interviewed a friend of mine who tutors at a middle school. She has been tutoring for three years. Her reasons for volunteering are that she enjoys helping kids learn and believes that education is a very important thing. The organization that she volunteers for goes to the middle school every morning and tutors the kids who have difficulty with their classes. An organization like this is needed in our community because everybody in my town does not believe that education is important for the future and tutoring children at a younger, more impressionable age makes an impact. She described her love for watching kids get excited about learning and doing their work. “Every time we all walk into the room, the kid’s race to their tutor, eager to learn more,” she said. As…
Extracurricular activities have played an important role in the life of our school district. These activities traditionally…
From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…
Junior year was a big year for me. I switched schools, moved across the country to Palo Alto, California, and was living without my parents for the first time. I had to make friends all over again, and one of the ways I did that was by joining a Jewish youth group, NCSY. NCSY’s mission is to inspire Jewish teens by creating lots of events; some span for a weekend while others are for an hour weekly. One program in particular is called Latte and Learn where teens from the NCSY chapter go to a Starbucks for an hour, buy some drinks and learn a topic in Torah. Because my NCSY chapter consists of the large Northern California area, Latte and Learn has 2 locations so that members can go to the one that’s closer to them. With this still, the closest…

I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. Although it was hard with my many extracurricular activities I somehow still managed to finish my junior year with a 3.8…

As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…
Reflection allows an individual to identify the reasons or purpose of understanding the outcome of a particular situation in depth in term of emotions on thought and feeling on the topic area. In addition, Reflection is something that we do implicitly as part of being human, underpinning our identities through a process of negotiation between our sense of self and our experiences of others (Demetriou, 2000, p.210). Therefore, I have implemented this quote in my professional and personal goals I wanted and have achieved thought-out the process of the module. I have made continues effort in building my confidence in situations that I have felt uncomfortable in.…
Central to the process of collaboration is working as a team, sharing responsibility and decision making, aspiring for the same goal, volunteering, and sharing resources. Additionally, it should be understood that everyone's voice and opinion counts, and that the process can vary, such as it can be informal, scheduled, or a spur-of-the-moment. Collaboration and sharing of resources greatly benefit the student and expands involvement in activities outside of school, such as joining the local recreational center (Taylor et al.,…
Seeing how Belmont Hill’s tutoring program works has inspired me to become a peer tutor. Working together with a younger peer on difficult material is a perfect example of academic teamwork at Belmont Hill. Belmont Hill proves how having a tutor is not a bad or embarrassing thing to do, but insteads thinks of it as one of the best move you can make when you are struggling. There are peer tutors for every subject, and they have all already passed the course, so they are very experienced and know what is coming. The case is the same in real life at Belmont Hill and in the book The Boys in the Boat; teamwork makes the dream work. In conclusion, getting extra help should not be an embarrassing thing to do, it should be a responsible move made by a student who is fully devoted to academics at Belmont…
Skiing and snowboarding are both very popular sports with many similarities and differences. The sport of skiing dates back to 5000 BC, while snowboarding is a relatively new sport, developed in the early 1900’s. Both sports are very popular in the U.S., where there are 481 different ski/snowboarding resorts and approximately 60 million Americans who partake in the sports each year. Americans make up more than half of the 110 million who ski or board worldwide.…
