My path towards identifying nurse anesthesia as my career goal began while I was working as a Registered Nurse at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. During this period, I received a report from a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), who explained to me what was done for the patient during the procedure. From the information received during the report, I felt intrigued to know more about profession, so I decided to shadow a nurse anesthesiologist. During my shadowing experience, I had the opportunity to get a different perspective of what a CRNA job entails and I was in awe while observing the CRNA perform her duties. It also made me realize that I still have more to learn, prompting me to apply to a CRNA school. Therefore, my academic goals while completing my Doctorate of Nurse Practice (DNP) at University of Miami include gaining as much knowledge and skill sets as possible to qualify as a CRNA. I also aspire to graduate near the top of my class with honors and pass my CRNA board exam.
In addition, with the help of knowledge gained prior to obtaining my degree from your institution, I will understand the pharmacodynamics of a medication and rightfully decide on the best sedation to use, considering each patient is unique. Therefore, deciding on the right medication can lead to successfully procedure thus, positively impacting the care of the patient.
Professionally, after earning my degree, I would have obtained the necessary knowledge needed to educate my patients and inform them of the step by step process of the procedure. Consequently, easing the patients’ mind, making them aware that I care, and improving their state of mind before the procedure. I also want to mentor the future generation of nurse anesthetists as those before me. I want to be the mentor that has the answers to their questions and will be willing to take the time to explain the complexities of anesthesia so that they are better prepared for future practice of
