The children originally think their father is feeble, boring, and that he does not do anything. Scout and Jem think that Atticus is feeble because, he was nearly fifty and that he is much older than the other children’s father’s. They say he never does anything. When they say anything, they mean he does not do activities that they enjoy doing. They also say that Atticus is boring. Atticus enjoys sitting inside and reading a good book, which according tot the kids classifies him as boring. Their whole idea of him changed when they saw him shoot the mad dog in a single, swift movement. Jem was awestruck and Scout was also in awe at the surprising sight. When speaking to their neighbor the kids heard her say that their father was civilized, and they could not disagree with that statement. They also heard the town saying that Atticus was a dead shot and they of course, had to agree because it’s not like they were wrong. The last thing is that Jem classifies their father as a gentleman now. When he was running away from scout back to the retrieve the rock he had thrown he said “Atticus is a gentleman, just like me!” (Lee 131).
