In the streets, people are walking like robots, texting into phones like machines; no voices are heard because people don’t speak to each other. The world is silent. The color of the world is gray. No emotions on people’s faces. Have people forgotten how to speak? What are they supposed to say to another human, don’t they remember? Didn’t they learn social graces in school? The year is 2050, the location is Manhattan. What has happened here? Well, Virtual Schools became the norm over thirty years ago, in 2020, and because people no longer had to communicate to other humans and just to a computer, they have forgotten what human interaction is. Sadly, thirty years later, society has changed. To prevent this problem, virtual schools should not be allowed to take place of the regular schools.
What is a virtual school and why do they exist? A virtual school is an offering of courses conducted over the internet where students study at their preferred location through a computer. When and where you study just depends on what you like. There are no teachers, no classmates, and no dress codes, no tardy policies, really no school rules. A quarter-million kids represent a tiny percentage of the 56 million kindergartners through 12th graders in the United States, but it’s a percentage that’s growing, according to The Journal’s numbers: up 40 percent in the last three years.” (New York Times) Virtual school exists for some students who want to be able learn at their own pace or be able to learn something their school does not offer. An important reason for virtual schools gaining more popularity is because the U.S. government encourages these alternatives, which saves money from both state and federal education expenditure. Is education the right item to save money on? Children are the leaders of tomorrow. North Carolina Virtual Public School, (NCVPS) started offering classes for high school students in 2007.
