Canada Climate Change
On Earth, climate change is a major factor that is happening and affecting everything. Climate change is also affecting Canada’s many primary resource industries. One specific primary industry is the forestry industry in British Columbia. Out of all the industries in Canada, I think that the forestry industry is the most impacted by climate change. Climate change is affecting British Columbia severely because of the mountain pine beetle. The mountain pine beetle is a bug that is native to the forests of western North America from Mexico to British Columbia. It is a very small (5mm) black bug that is very hard to identify. The mountain pine beetle is responsible for destroying the trees that are harvested by the forestry industries by blocking
the airways within the trees until they are dead. Once a pine beetle enters a tree, that tree cannot be used for manufacturing purposes; making paper, building houses, tables, etc. Usually mountain pine beetle populations are kept at a good rate by very wet summers, harsh winters, and cold springs, which kill a part of the population before it gets too far north, but because of climate change, the winters are getting warmer and the summers are getting dryer. During the cold winters, most of the pine beetle population would die, but because of climate change, these beetles are over populating since winters are no longer cold enough to kill these beetles. They are now able survive in areas where the could not have lived in the past. The mountain pine beetles are making its way up north and are going to make it to the forests of Alberta.
