- Overview Washington, D.C. is the capital of United States and is the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal government and therefore does not belong to any state. The centers of all three branches of the Federal government are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monument and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
The city has an interesting history starting with it being named after the first president George Washington. Oddly enough the first mayor of Washington, DC also had the last name Washington; his name was Walter Washington and was in office from 1967-1979. The name of the city is Washington and it 's equivalent reference as a state is the District of Columbia. Although they encompass the same geographic area they are technically referred to as Washington the city and District of Columbia as a state. Washington, D.C. was created on July 16, 1790 with land donated by the states of Maryland and Virginia. Congress returned the Virginia portion of the land in 1846 during the political build up to the civil war giving the District of Columbia the distinct shape and territory that it remains
