The Russian socialist Karl Marx believed that capitalism would eventually deteriorate the working class into poverty, and social reform would have to follow. This led to a heightened sense of duty in Americans to explore their newly acquired land and use it to their advantage. France gave up a lot of land for a small amount of money. Fifteen million dollars may not seem that cheap, but given the amount of land they purchased, this was a steal. This also gave way to other economic and political problems, such as the issue of whether slavery would expand westward or stay in the Southeastern states. This led to the formation of numerous parties throughout the evolution of democracy throughout the years, and also was a very controversial topic for the candidates running for President. After acquiring the Louisiana Purchase, this allowed for even more expansion westward, which led to foreign affairs with Mexico and also more encounters with Native Americans.
