Engaging Khan in an attempt to get necessary information, Kirk learns the truth behind Khan's existence and importance. Kirk says to Spock, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” as he turns to the intelligence of Khan to outsmart the deceiving Admiral Marcus. The continuous battles between Captain Kirk, Admiral Marcus, and Khan are unending, as Kirk’s primary goal is to stop an all out war and get his crew home safely. Khan strikes a soft spot in Kirk's heart as he says, “My crew is my family, Kirk. Is there anything you would not do for your family?” These, and more, events test Kirk's knowledge and decision-making, because one wrong move could end his life, along with everyone around him. The deception of Starfleet Admiral Marcus arose a feeling of betrayal in Kirk, and proceeded to boost his determination to do what is right, unlike his attitude in the beginning.
