Captain Torres Narrative
I went down to the school at six, just as he said. Captain Torres and his men had spread the word and posted notices. “Failure to join the assembly will be seen as an act of war against the Free National Army and the Hispanian Federation and offenders will be arrested and executed.” However, the captain and his men had miscalculated – there were hundreds of people, far too many for the schoolyard, so they put up roadblocks to keep any more people coming in. Unfortunately, I came early out of a fear of getting arrested. Looking around, I saw ranks of soldiers surrounding the schoolyard, their rifles pointing menacingly at us. The FNA were making it absolutely clear that if any kind of riot broke out, we’d be massacred. On one side of the schoolyard, an area had been cleared. A drum began beating slowly and I heard the sound of shuffling feet. I then saw a line of ragged and bloodied men being pushed along by a row of armed soldiers. I could just see them through the shoulders of the people in front of me. The lady next to me urgently whispered, “Don’t look!” The kid next to her closed his eyes tight, then opened them up once again. I guess the excitement of what was happening was too much for the kid. Just then, a command was barked and the line of men …show more content…
I looked around and saw the voice behind those commands. Standing a few feet away stood the smug figure of Captain Torres. The same filthy murderer that I was face to face with in the barbershop just a few hours before. Torres walked up onto a podium where a microphone was set up for him. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, his voice ringing out from the speakers set up around the schoolyard. “There are ten men here. Half of these men have been convicted of rebellion and treason. The other half have done nothing wrong. Half of these men will be shot, and half will be spared. This will all be decided in an interesting and entertaining way, however. Enjoy the

“All Quiet in the Western Front” is a social commentary on how soldiers are effected emotionally and socially throughout the war and are conflicted on how to readjust to their lives after the Great War. Soldiers are conflicted by their character and do not know whether to pick back life up as a youth or as adults who have endured hard circumstances. The book does not focus on battles and it does not focus on a specific time frame, it rather evaluates what goes through the minds of a soldier. These men are literally being bombarded in the war front by explosives and in the home front by misinformed public who want to know the extremity of the war. Bystanders set High expectations for soldiers to be tough and to know how to behave in order to survive, yet those who did not participate in the Great War could only speculate what was going on in the soldier’s minds. The Great War damaged these soldiers physically and mentally, however certain elements gave the survivors the ability to pull through the war. The youth shifted its mentality and lost its innocence in the Great War. Therefore, Remarque did not focus his book on the combat that took place during the Great War, rather he presents social issues, which does not belittle his experience rather it presents a different view of the…

In the short story of Ambrose Bierce’s “Chickamauga,” the author uses imagery to contrast a child’s innocent immagination to the actual horrors of warfare. Bierce first conveys the picture by painting soldiers “singularly white… and gouted with red” as the child is reminded of “painted clowns” when he spots them. This is used to explain that the child thinks of the gruesomely faced soldiers as a source of entertainment for him. Furthermore, the innocence of the boy creates a disturbing atmosphere to the readers as he continues to play and ride on them. After the encounter, the child is then seen crossing “water gleamed with dashes of red” while he approaches a “blazing ruin of a dwelling.”…

I was sitting with my family at the breakfast table drinking milk and eating a piece of burnt toast; that was when I heard the feint sound of sirens coming from the east end of the block. My dads face grew pale and my mother quickly stood up and grabbed my brother and mines hand. She guided us towards the back of the house through a small opening in the floor. Once we reached the hole, she took my brothers hand and placed it in mine, telling him to watch over me. We were put into the hole and she kissed our heads, then covered the little light we had with a rug. I started to panic, unaware of the destruction and persecution that lay before me on a silver platter. We spent a week in that ditch, although it had felt like a lifetime. All the while, I thought of my parents: where had they gone; would they soon return? One day while we were there, with cramps building up in my legs, I heard footsteps coming from above my head. My brother hoping it was our parents returning to save us from the forever darkness that we faced slid the rug over and peered up with squinting eyes. The rough man standing above us, however, was not our father, but a man I would soon come to know as, Nazi soldier. The reasons of our taking were not because of crime, but because of my ethnicity, the way I looked, the way I spoke, and even my religion.…

Every Morning, the soldiers wake up at five am to the beat of the drums, they have forty-five minutes to get ready put on their uniform and to go eat breakfast. During the cold winters the unions uniforms were really warm and they’re first activity is the running drill that they practice with weapons. Drilling is one of the main activities soldiers do during the winter. It prepares them for fighting and makes them smarter on how to use their weapons. The soldiers are doing drills now to keep themselves warm and to make themselves stronger, for the next time they go into war. “in between drills, we drill” one soldier has told me. Sometimes during drills the other soldiers are playing harmonics to keep the rest of the soldiers entertained. A soldier’s life basically revolves around drills. The soldiers are living not in the best condition; it is negative twelve degrees Celsius. it was snowing like it never has before. Army camps are like a huge bustling city. All the soldiers are living in Log Huts that they have constructed. One log hut could fit in several men. Wasn’t the best place to sleep in but at least it was better than in the south.…

I had just arrived to my destination: Gallipoli, Turkey. As nervous as I was already with shivers down my spine nearly every minute I didn’t want to lose my young life tomorrow. It was a long ride but my troops and I were prepared for what could come our way. We jumped off the half sunken ship due to the enormous amount of soldiers. It was going to be a long and hard battle. The water we had to walk through to set up our camps was muddy and clumpy I was hoping I don’t get trench foot. Me, as the leader leaded on where we have to set up our camps. We set up our tents around the gruesome field of dead, yellow, sun dried grass next to the sandy rough hills. Rain had just started sprinkling and the next minute, hailing, it lit out our fire along with a deathlike thunderstorm. The dogs started howling under the glowing half-moon that gave us the only light left. I knew the next day only brought frightful visions of what will come to us tomorrow….…

It was 115 degrees; the platoon was walking through the middle of the desert each of them with 40 pounds of gear on and an M16A2 rifle. It was summer time in the country of Afghanistan and the temperature was rising. At this point I asked myself what the hell I am doing here and why did I join the United States Army? Right when I was thinking that I felt a tug on my leg and there stood a young boy about 7 years old with only one arm, “Candy,Candy” he asked. Upon speaking with the local villagers we found out that his arm was taken from an improvised explosive device (IED) planted there by the rebeles that wanted to “rid their country of the weak”. That is when it occurred to me that I was here to protect my country from those that think that we are weak.…

Damn the hour that he came in, because I am a revolutionary but not a murderer. And it would have been so easy to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he deserve it? No, hell no! No one deserves to be the sacrifice that turns other people into murderers. What good could come of that? None, of course. More and more people come and the first group kills the second who killed the third, and it continues on and on until the world is a sea of blood. I could slit his throat, just like that, bam! He wouldn't have time to groan in pain and since his eyes were closed, he wouldn't see the gleam of the razor or the gleam in my eyes. But I was shaking like a real murderer. A stream of blood would spill from his neck, onto the sheet, onto the chair, onto my hands, onto the ground. I would have to close the door. And the blood would continue on the floor, warm, permanent, unstoppable; onto the street, like a small scarlet brook. I am sure that with a strong stroke, a slicing cut, he wouldn’t feel any pain. He wouldn't suffer. But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I’d have to run, leaving all of this, take cover far, far away. But they would follow me until they ran into me. "Captain Torres' murderer. He cut his throat while he was shaving him. What a coward." But, on the other hand: "He avenged us. A name to remember (my name here). He was a barber of the people. No one knew that he was fighting for our cause…" So what? Murderer or hero? My…

I didn’t feel a thing for him, didn’t think that much about what I was doing. I just waited for the corporal’s order. The prisoner was simply another rebel who was responsible for the death of my family, as I had come to truly believe. The corporal gave the signal with a pistol shot and I grabbed the man’s head and slit his throat in one fluid motion. His Adam’s apple made way for the sharp knife, and I turned the bayonet on its zigzag…

The words that Tim O’Brien used to describe the war were mind boggling. It made me realize anything can happen at any minute and anything can change at any moment. It’s hard to imagine what the soldiers must have felt so young in such a terrifying and unforgiving war. To constantly live in fear of death is unimaginable. The descriptive language of this passage helped clarify how the soldiers felt and perceived the war; by expanding my mind on how feelings and emotions can change as rapidly as clock ticks. This is an extremely powerful passage as it presents war in a way that may not be typical or expected.…

In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway demonstrates the unforeseeable reality of war to develop the theme fear is found among all soldiers. Through the use of similes, Hemingway describes soldiers’ initial reactions to uncertain events while in war. For example, Hemingway writes, “There was a cough, a noise like a railway engine starting and then an explosion that shook the earth again,” (54). By comparing the blast to an engine, Hemingway describes how unexpected it was. The sound of a railway engine can be frightening if it is not…
