Carboxylic Acid Lab Report
Carboxylic acids are compounds which contain a carboxyl group, -COOH group, where the -COOH group is attached either to a hydrogen atom or to an alkyl group. One of the example of carboxylic acid is benzoic acid( benzene carboxylic acid) which has a benzene connected to the carboxyl carboxyl group, -COOH group. It has a formula of C6H5COOH.
The carbon atom of a carboxyl group has a high oxidation state. Therefore, that many of the chemical reactions used for their preparation are oxidations. In this experiment, an aromatic carboxylic acids namely benzoic acid will be prepared by oxidizing benzyl alcohol which is a primary alcohol. The oxidizing agent used is alkaline potassium permanganate (VII). Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with the formula C6H5CH2OH. It is a primary alcohol because the carbon atom which the hydroxyl group,-OH group is connected joins to one alkyl group and two hydrogen atoms.

The final compound which I am going to look at is 4-aminobenzenecarboxylic acid. The compound is also known as 4-Aminobenzoic acid. The molecular and structural formula of the compound is C7H7NO2 which means that the compound consists of seven carbon atoms attached to seven hydrogen atoms along with one nitrogen atom and two carbon atoms attached as a carbon-oxygen double bond. The displayed formula for the 4-aminobenzenecarboxylic acid compound is shown and it shows the formula in a ring form therefore means that the compound is an aromatic compound. This is an aromatic compound because the compound consists of six carbons of benzene joined in a ring, having the planar geometry of a regular hexagon in which the distance between all of the C-C bonds are equal.…

    1. The Respiratory exchange ratio is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide produced and oxygen consumed. The ratio indicates the energy that the subject is expending for indirect calorimetry, how efficient the subject 's body is at utilizing the oxygen inhaled, as well as the main substrate being used for energy during varying intensities of exercise. During rest the volume of carbon dioxide was 0.73L/min, the volume of oxygen was 0.84L/min. The RQ or RER was 0.87. Based on Table 5.1(Kenney,Wilmore, &Costill, 2012; Physiology of Sport and Exercise(5th ed.) The ratio indicates that roughly 68% of the kcal that the subject was using came from carbohydrates and the remaining 32% of the kcal came from fat. During the 50W stage the volume of carbon dioxide was 2.2L/min and the volume of oxygen was 2.9L/min. The RQ was 0.79, which indicates that the 33% of the kcal that the subject was using came from carbohydrates and that 67% of the kcal came from fat. In the 100W stage the volume of carbon dioxide was 4.08L/min and the volume of oxygen consumed was 4.1L/min. The RQ came out o be 0.99, the substrate being used was only carbohydrates at this point. The 200w stage had a carbon dioxide volume of 7.91L/min and a oxygen consumed volume of 6.51L/min. The RQ was 1.2 which indicates that the body is producing more carbon dioxide than the oxygen being consumed. The substrate being used for energy again is only carbohydrates.…

In this experiment, dilutions of 250 ppm, 200 ppm, 100 ppm, and 25 ppm of 12C solution was prepared from a caffeine stock solution using ethyl acetate as the solvent. 250 µL of each dilution was added to a respective 0.6 mL vials with 50 µL of 13C and mixed. Next, three 15 mL centrifuge tubes were labeled as “Unknown A,” three were labeled as “Unknown B” and one was labeled “Control.” To each tube, 4 mL of ethyl acetate and 1 mL of the respective unknown or control (100 ppm 12C solution) was added to the respective flasks. Each tube was placed in a sonicator for 2 minutes and then centrifuged for 30 seconds. With each solution mixed and separated into an organic layer and aqueous layer, 1 mL of the organic layer for each solution was transferred to a labeled 2 mL vial. To each vial, about 0.1 g of anhydrous magnesium sulfate was added. Each solution was vortexed and 250 µL of each solution was added to a respective 0.6 mL vial. 50 µL of an…
