The welfare system in the United States is complex. Ehrenreich describes how the poor lives. Apparently, her books shows how unfair the welfare system is in the US. Basically, she shows only one side of the story. Her book provides a series of stories of how the other half live.
Descriptions of where and how the poor live in different cities are similar to “How the other half live” no the poor in Nickel & Dimed were not tenements. But they live in quite small apartments or trailers. They do not eat fresh food, mostly the food comes from fast food restaurant and processed food.
The other side of the story Ehrenreich did not experience or did not mention in her book is that some of the poor use federal aid wisely. Some of the people receive government help use the money to go to college, rent descent place to live and maintain the place quite clean. Most of these people are single mother. Once they got a degree they do not want to work in low paid jobs, for example, Fast Food Company.
Notwithstanding, Ehrenreich encountered situations that I think she would never thought she would face. Just like Wednesday never thought to be living at the Upper East Side would require a lot of changes in her life.
