Lab 7: BMI/WHR and Body Composition Assessment
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Preparation
Before weighing and measuring, be sure to remove shoes, all heavy objects in pockets, and heavy jewelry (necklaces, rings, piercings, grills, etc.).
Instructions
1. Before stepping onto the scale, be sure that the scale is calibrated to zero. If not, ask for the instructor to zero the scale. Do not do it yourself.
2. Step onto the scale and have a partner weigh you. Calculate it to the nearest pound.
3. Record your weight. Convert it to kilograms.
Weight (lbs):182
Weight (kg): Weight (lbs)182 / 2.2 = 82 kg
4. Step onto the scale again, and turn around 180 degrees, facing away from the scale. …show more content…
Now calculate your BMI from the equation below.
Body Mass Index: (Weight (kg)82) / (Height(m)1.76^2) = 26.71
9. Assess your BMI from the chart found on p.181 in your textbook. How are you classified?
Waist/Hip Ratio (W/H)
Preparation
Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing. It will be helpful to familiarize yourself with the sites needed to be measured. The tape measure should be snug, but not tight and completely horizontal.
Instructions
1. With a tape measure, first measure the circumference of the waist in inches. The position of measurement is the narrowest area of the torso, approximately 1/2-1 inch above the navel. Have the individual being tested hold their breath at mid-inhalation when performing the measurement.
2. Record the measurement.
Waist (in):34
3. The second measurement is the circumference of the hip in inches. The position of measurement is the widest area of the hips, approximately 1/2-1 inch below the iliac crest, or in line with the head of the femur. It is easiest to measure from the side of the body so you can see the widest area of the hips, buttocks.
4. Record the measurement.
Hips (in):42
5. Now calculate the W/H ratio from the equation
