3.2 What issues associated with the business fundamentals as described in Chapter 2 are illustrated in the case?
Greed: the picketers, with the decent pay and benefits still ask for more. Also, the government since they are monopolizing the industry.
Mistrust: small businesses left the city after they felt they are being held hostages by greedy workers and government and not getting the services they deserve.
Economic downturns: due to higher taxation many businesses had already left the city according to the CFI which means it will have a negative impact on the economy and also threatening future investments.
3.3 What can or should Nick do?
Nick can easily relocate and start somewhere else. But what he should do is to get every business affected by this matter involved and perhaps form a group to oppose to the issue. This is the only way governments around the world can take peoples’ words into consideration and actually do something about it.
3.4 What should be done about the union’s monopoly?
The union’s monopoly should no longer be existed. It should be privatized and have competitions in order to better the quality of the service. Another way is to make it an essential service. By doing so, workers will not have the right to strike which means more efficiency and effectiveness.
