Mother Teresa once said, “I can do things you can not, you can do things that I can not; together we can do great things.” When it comes to unity people must stand together and be united to overcome any difficulties. In our country, United States, we are facing a very hard time in getting the country in a very beautiful shape because many people are ruining the hypothesis of being united. In addition, when it comes to how we can build our country and make it more successful, people often believe that the government only responsible source for doing that. However, this is wrong because as citizens, we also have to contribute in a very big part in makeing our country prosperous. The formula of unity is complicated to most people in our world, that is why our country is seemingly more …show more content…
divided today than ever.
But, there must be a solution that can pave the way toward the most flourishing nation. We recently read several articles describing the issues to why U.S. is divided. The authors that discuss the division are Lauren Griffin and Annie Neimand in their article “No one Wants to be wrong: Why Each Side of the Partisan Divide Think the Other is Living in an Alternate Reality,” Trevor Noah in his piece “Let’s Not Be Divided. Divided People Are Easier to Rule,” Bob Herbert’s “Hiding From Reality,” (What’s Up With the American Dream?) as well as Conor Friedersdorf’s “Making Up Is Hard to Do,” and Filippo Menczer ‘s “Misinformation on social media--can technology save us?” There are many things that play a significant role in making the divide in our country such as politics, social media, and the different viewpoint of people, but also there may be some solutions that can pave the way and close the gap
to build our bright future.
Politics is one of the major reasons to why the United States today is more divided than ever. To begin, our country is simply divided by having two parties which are Democrats and Republican. Each one of them is taking a side and therefore splitting the citizens into two groups with them. Friedersdorf explains how the country is getting more divided and chaotic because of the encouragement that the people are getting to either be Democrats or Republican. For instance, he states that “... when the cable networks sorted Americans neatly into a red team and a blue team… ‘The pundits like to slice and dice our country into … red states for Republicans, blue states for Democrats,’ he said” (Friedersdorf 1). Politicians usually make people think of themselves as two parties ( Democrats vs Republican) rather than making them come together to build a more successful country. We are driving the country to the point where we cannot recover again. Our separation is helping the enemies to take advantage of us. In other words, we are putting our country at risk without thinking how hard the consequences may be. Politics is trying to sow hatred between people and leave them fighting each other. We elect our leaders that can rule our country in a right way, but they often become careless about the citizens the moment they get in power. They forget about how to make the country more successful, but all they care about is the advantages they get. In the article, Trevor Noah discuss how bad impact that the politicas have on our country. For example, he explains “... like Mr. Trump want: Divided people are easier to rule. That was, after all, the whole point of apartheid” (Noah 2). We just go after what our elected officials say and do without looking at what may happen to our country. We do not look deeply at the corruption that is happening. Unfortunately, politicians are harming the country, encouraging us to fight each other, and destroying what effort and hard work that the old people put to build this prosperous country. Politics is playing a very major role in forming the division in our country. But, we should stand against each one who is trying to destroy the country. We are one as long as we are living in the United States, we should come together to get over those who are trying to demolish our country.
Additionally, Social media has a very powerful impact in creating the division among the citizens and making it go viral. Even though many people think that social media is a very important source that provide them with the information about what is going on, it is the major reason that is playing people and getting them more separated. We usually read what newspapers say, listen to news in the television, as well as look up a certain information in the internet without thinking if this information is right or even wrong. Most of the time we read and listen to exaggerated stories without even recognizing it. Therefore, we get angry at each other because of the tension that we gain from hearing this news. Griffin and Neimand in their article discusses how social media promotes misinformation and sowing discord among the citizens. To illustrate, they says “Certainly misleading media and hyper partisan media users play a role in promoting misleading information” (Griffin and Neimand). This shows that the main goal of social media is to make the little things big, thus get people angry at each other and even driving them to get into fight and this may be leading to a war. By looking deeply at the reason that is driving them to do that, we can discover that each of these sources is a supporter to one of the parties and this is how they fight. When thinking about the election of the 2016, we may think that the misinformation had a very powerful impact in determining who was going to win. Filippo Menczer describes how social media can be so effective in shaping people’s opinion and sowing the hatred among them. To illustrate, he discusses, “Many are asking whether this onslaught of digital misinformation affected the outcome of the 2016 U.S. election. The truth is we do not know, although there are reasons to believe it is entirely possible, based on past analysis and accounts from other countries. Each piece of misinformation contributes to the shaping of our opinions” (Menczer 1). Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube are making people go to the wrong direction by the fake information that people are posting in their pages. For example, some facebook pages posts things about Trump and how perfect he is. Because this page is owned by people who are supporting Trump, we can see only good aspect from Trump's presidency. But the pazzles has not been assembled yet, we are still missing some pieces. This is how social media works, and this is how our world is getting complicated day after day. Again, We all should stand together to overcome all the difficulties that we are facing. It is right that we do not live in a utopia, but standing together as a solid body could lead us be united.
Furthermore, different people may have a different perspective and this is making the divid more intense in our country. It is one of our right to express our mind and how we think. Our opinions vary from one another. In other words, we may believe in something and other people believe in another thing; however, this should not be a problem. When it comes to the United States division, we can interpret that people playing a very important part of creating the gap by fighting each other on who is right and who's wrong. In the reality, there is no one right and no one wrong that is why this is called personal viewpoint. Unfortunately, people are making the problem bigger day after day. Democrat supporters think that they are the only ones who is playing right in the playground and the Republicans are not, and vice versa. In addition, the government is setting it more in fire than trying to calm people down. The two parties are encouraging people to become divided more than ever. Griffin and Neimand explain who people try to avoid anything that they do not like just because it is different than what they believe in. For instance, they explain that “ For instance, one study found that people didn’t want to see the results of a test for implicit racial bias when they were told that they might subconsciously have racist views. Because these results challenged how they saw themselves -- as not racist --they simply avoided them” (Griffin and Neimand 2). We always try to avoid hearing about things that we do not like. Same thing goes in our political views. If we are Democrats, we hate to hear things about Republican and vice versa. Therefore, this is making us go further to the sides instead of bringing us to the middle. Our dream is to build our prosperous country to live a better life in it. All we are asking for is so simple, but we are making it more complicated by splitting into parts based on our various beliefs that are leading us toward a closed door. And what are we doing? We are not paying attention to all the destruction that we are causing to our country. In addition, Bob Herbert writes about how we are not looking at the bad things that we are creating throughout the fight of “I am right, and you are wrong.” For example, he says that “America will never get its act together until we recognize how much trouble we are making” (Herbert 2). It is so obvious that we are repulsing from each other instead of coming together to and fight the enemies. We may not be wrong, but we are not right all the time. We should try to understand each other's opinions regardless to which part they belong. Our goal is to focus on how to end the divid.
In conclusion, the division in our country is complicated and requires a lot of sacrifices in order to be solved. When people first came here, they came in order to live a better life and stay away from conflicts that the government system created in their countries. Today, we are recreating the gap that the they escaped from to come and live in the United States. Our country is seemingly more divided today than ever. Politics, social media, and the different perspective of people are contributing in widening the gap. To have a better life, we must stand together as a one hand and fight whoever is trying to destroy our country. We should believe in ourselves and trust each other regardless to what each of us think. We should stop thinking about this group supports Democrats and that group suportes Republican. But, we should focus on building a solid body to not let those who are taking advantage of our division demolish us. We should not be convinced by media easily and our reaction must be reasonable to whatever we hear or read. The country’s future is in our hands, so we should persist, persevere, and have the determination to build our prosperous country and painting the fate of our bright future.
