I found the Iridium Company case study fascinating in that it afforded me the opportunity to research this company as a Marketing 500 case study and as an item of personal curiosity that has fascinated me since owning a Delorme GPS.
My personal observation of Iridium’s competitive strategy
I am an avid Sea Kayaker, occasionally venturing up to ten miles off shore to remote islands (,e.g, Isle of Shoals, NH/ME on 9/28/13). Knowing that I can contact emergency services in the event of a disaster has always been on my mind when planning a remote adventure paddle. However in addition to the Delorme GPS that I carry on my kayak I have a VHS radio in my vest. I have seen advertisements for the Delorme inReach two way satellite communicator for use in such emergency situations.
Delorme Product Announcement
The Delorme inReach product is positioned as a global emergency location and communication device. It was announced in 2011 and billed as the first consumer-affordable satellite communicator with two-way SOS and personal text messaging, message delivery confirmation, Follow-Me/Find-Me Tracking and Location, and global coverage.
Iridium and Delorme have partnered to offer their combined services and even included inReach integration with iPhone®, iPad® and iPod® touch. (http://www.delorme.com//about/pressreleases/inreach_smartphone.htm)
Affordable Consumer Satellite Communication
Delorme mentions in their product announcement that consumer service plans are available for as little as $9.95/mo. Iridium includes the following table in their internet marketing data:
“We’ve done our best to create a subscription plan for every inReach use we could conceive of. Subscriptions include monthly payment features and bundled text messages or tracking options. And you can even switch between plans at any time.” Safety Plan Recreation Plan Expedition Plan
