Lavonne will be a sophomore in the coming semester; she intends to major in political science in one of her major courses. She met Professor Hamilton, an authority in the field of public housing who has also offered her a big opportunity that can also change her life, an internship in the city's Housing Authority. Lavonne knows the operations of Chicken Empire inside and out, in addition to knowing how to prepare the food and serve the public she has worked with the manager on inventory control and ordering supplies.
If she decides to take the station manager position she will receive $1,635 a month, before taxes a huge raise over the $7.50 an hour she now makes. As station manager, Lavonne will have to put in between 30 and 40 hours at the outlet and, another 5 to 10 hours a week at home. By taking this promotion it will ease Lavonne goal to buy a car, the car will make her life easier since she will have her own transportation. Even though the money will be great for Lavonne there is a down side if she decides to take the opportunity as a manager. Since Lavonne will have to dedicate more hours to work and less time on school. Lavonne will take a huge financial cut if she decides not to take the manager
position.
Becoming a sophomore in school, she intends to major in political science. Lavonne has aspirations of going into a government job, but her lack of knowledge will not allow her to see what her future career might take her. Between work and school, she has maintained a B+ average in school which can open the opportunity to applying to a good school. In one of Lavonne major course, she met Professor Hamilton who is an authority in the field of public housing. Professor Hamilton has told her, he can almost certainly get Lavonne an internship in the city's Housing Authority which is a great opportunity for her. The internship would probably require 15 to 20 hours of work a week and pay about $9.00 an hour which is a slight pay cut compared to her other job. By taking this decision the internship can possibly open many doors for her in the future. The down side will be rejecting her internship which will not allow her to get the exposure and experience needed for her career in the future.
The social life of Lavonne is also something that has to be taken into consideration. By taking the management position has added benefits but it also has cons because of the time that she has to spend working. As it was mentioned in the story that she is going to be on a salary wage which means that there are days that she can put in a lot of hours and still get paid the same. If Lavonne was to try to do both work and school then she can pretty much say that she will not have a social life. If Lavonne takes into consideration the internship then she will have the extra time to have a social life and interact with her peers. Lavonne will only need to provide 20 hours a week with her internship position, which allows her to have extra time to build and have a social life and time for school work.
One of Lavonne goals was to purchase a car, so she can have a trust worthy transportation that can allow her to get to places. Having a car will allow Lavonne to get to her destinations faster which saves her time from her tight schedule. If Lavonne were to take the position as a manager, then she will be able to save money faster and get that car that she has always dreamed off. Having her own reliable transportation can be a priority because now she has control of her own time. Purchasing the car has many bit benefits but it also has some cons that have to be considered before committing to car. Lavonne, by purchasing the car will now have to take monthly payments and insurance bills every month. By adding the added pressure of a payment to Lavonne there is a potential chance that she can be seduce to work more and spend less time in school.
After considering all the options I have gathered my best conclusion of what I think will make Lavonne happy. From examining both options from taking the manager position and internship I believe the best option for her would be the internship. Lavonne would have more open doors to her future career that in the long run will bring in more money than if she would to take the manger position. Not only will she have more time to dedicate to school and maintain her grade point average, she also is getting the exposure needed to build experience in her field. This is why the internship is the best choice for Lavonne.
