Dax’s prognosis for survival was approximately 20%, but his potential quality of life was deeply compromised. He repeatedly requested to die and these requests were all denied. He unsuccessfully attempted suicide by, for example, trying to crawl out of his hospital bed in an attempt to throw himself down the staircase. He was grossly infected by the time he left the hospital and hoped that he would die from sepsis. He didn’t. Against his will, he underwent 232 days of treatment in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. The types of treatment available at that time we might consider as quite “barbaric”. Immersion in tanks of saline, continuous debridement and medications now considered inappropriate were then the best known way to manage such extensive burn injuries. Also, at that time, there was a great fear that hospitals might inadvertently be producing “drug addicts”, so analgesia was kept at a minimum.…

George Weinberg first coined the term “homophobia” in 1967 (Britton 1) as “a fear of homosexuals which seemed to be associated with a fear of contagion, a fear of reducing the things one fought for—home and family” (Herek 7). Regardless of particular standpoints that individuals may hold, society as a whole shares the understanding that homosexual desires are taboo and subordinate to heterosexuality. Generally speaking, women tend to be less homophobic than men and I hypothesize believe that it is simply because women are considered the inferior sex and are therefore hold less power in society. Since females have little…

When I first heard he was in the hospital, I didn’t believe it. I knew he was sick, but he’s always been sick. Whether it was with a cold or the stomach flu, being sick wasn’t new. But never sick enough to land himself a spot in ICU at Lawrence General like he is now. I was told over the phone that it was just a small case of pneumonia. However, it was more than that and we all knew it. He was too stubborn to admit weakness as always. That flaw almost killed him.…

Homophobia was first coined by psychologist George Weinberg in his book Society and the Healthy Homosexual (“Homophobia”). A year before this, the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove “Homosexuality” from the list of mental disorders. This was not a new concept, however. It was just given a name by Weinberg. The word first appeared in an article in 1969 but it was used to refer to straight men's fear that others might think they are gay (“Homophobia”). There are some very disturbing facts in regard to homosexuals and homophobia. Many gays and lesbians are the victim of anti-gay violence. However about 80% never report it for fear of being called a homosexual (National). Also 85% of teachers oppose integration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT themes into their classes.…

Outside in the rain, a young man approached the house. He knew exactly where to go, he had been watching the back door. No one knows how often he had been out there, but he knew exactly where to find the hidden key. It was hidden in a woodpile behind some bushes next to the whit picked fence. He used it to let himself in the back door. He walked through the kitchen, around a corner, up the stairs, past the kids' rooms, and into Ross's bedroom. She'd been asleep for about half an hour, and the movement in the room startled her awake. Her first thought was that one of the children had come to her with a problem. Then she noticed the flashlight held by a tall figure dimly illuminated by a night-light down the hall. "Who are you? What do you want?" She demanded. "My friend is with your children, and he has a gun," the man said. "He'll kill them if you don't do what I want." Ross pleaded with him to take whatever money was there and leave. Her told her not to scream, and when she began to cry, he told her she should stop, because he said "you're a grown woman." He performed oral sex on her, and then raped her. When he had finished, he said to no one in particular, "That was awesome." Then he put a pillow over her face, told her to count to 100, and then he left the house. When she was sure he was gone, she checked the children and found the asleep and unharmed (apparently there had been no accomplice). (Grossman) This is just one of the disturbing situations where an innocent person is made into a victim.…
