One of the purposes of working as a team is the combining of ideas and different perspectives. In order to better understand each other’s opinions it is important to understand each other’s roles and responsibilities (Koubel & Bungay, 2009). By understanding each other, patient development is guaranteed. Knowing who to call in an emergency or who to contact for support if a patient needs it is greatly determining. For example, in the present scenario as Mr. Fleming is in hospital the family may suffer from financial difficulties as well as child care issues. Mr. Fleming may have to reduce his working hours as a consequence of the heart attack and this could strain the family on the long term. The way we consider and look at family-centred care has also changed. However, the most important characteristics remain which are empathy, care and compassion. Patients should be treated with dignity, respect and they should be informed and offered services during their care. Family members should also be involved in a loved one’s care and development as it enhances the chances of getting the patient better and safely back into a normal environment. Patient care has evolved over time and the way patient care is carried out in hospitals is by coming together and working collaboratively as a team towards the same goal. Being part of a multi-disciplinary team means everyone should know the other’s responsibilities and roles. This way patient care is enhanced in a dignified and respectful manner. Furthermore, the patient has to be an inclusive partner in his care. Quality will improve when patients are the centre of attention and an active part of patient care. Family members should always be involved with patient’s consent. Furthermore, personalised care plans are a good way of working towards family-centred care. Care plans are tailored around patient’s needs, however to reach the point where patient-centred care comes naturally to all health professionals we need to work in a team, educate and train
