Novartis India Ltd,imited a world leading pharmaceutical company in the world, is producing a number of health related products and has core businesses in pharmaceuticals, vaccines, consumer health, generics, eye care and animal health. Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Novartis employs nearly 115, 000 people in over 140 countries worldwide to help save lives and improve the quality of life. The Ggroup is present in India through Novartis India Limited, listed on the Mumbai Stock Exchange and its wholly owned subsidiaries Novartis Healthcare Private Limited, Sandoz Private Limited and Chiron Behring Vaccines Private Limited. The product list of the company also includes Lucentis treatment for cure of macular degeneration (AMD). Macular …show more content…
In India, both the companies i:e Novartis and Oriental Insurance had tied up to protect the patients suffering from macular degeneration (AMD) as Novartis provides medicine and Oriental gives insurance cover to AMD patients.
Rasula Begum Chaudhary a resident of Kolkata was suffering from neo-vascular (wet) age rated to muscular degeneration (AMD), Visual Disorder and required Lucentis treatment, a product of Novarits India. She purchased mediclaim reimbursement policy from Oriental Insurance Company limited, Kolkata through Novartis for the period of one year with effect fromw.e.f. 25.9.2008 to 24.09.2009 to cover her medical expenses. She thought that all the expenses now will be covered by the insurance company hence she was happy and relaxed. She purchased four doses of the medicine from Novartis and sought reimbursement form oriental insurance company against her medical reimbursement policy. Oriental insurance company reimbursed the cost of medicine but declined to pay the cost of the fourth dose of medicine amounting to Rs.71,412/ on the ground of failure on her part for monthly follow-up with the doctor. This was shocked to her as she was already suffering already from illness. She also took up the matter with Novartis but the company also declined her request to intervene even though policy was purchased through them.
