In India, both the companies i:e Novartis and Oriental Insurance had tied up to protect the patients suffering from macular degeneration (AMD) as Novartis provides medicine and Oriental gives insurance cover to AMD patients.
Rasula Begum Chaudhary a resident of Kolkata was suffering from neo-vascular (wet) age rated to muscular degeneration (AMD), Visual Disorder and required Lucentis treatment, a product of Novarits India. She purchased mediclaim reimbursement policy from Oriental Insurance Company limited, Kolkata through Novartis for the period of one year with effect fromw.e.f. 25.9.2008 to 24.09.2009 to cover her medical expenses. She thought that all the expenses now will be covered by the insurance company hence she was happy and relaxed. She purchased four doses of the medicine from Novartis and sought reimbursement form oriental insurance company against her medical reimbursement policy. Oriental insurance company reimbursed the cost of medicine but declined to pay the cost of the fourth dose of medicine amounting to Rs.71,412/ on the ground of failure on her part for monthly follow-up with the doctor. This was shocked to her as she was already suffering already from illness.
