A labor organization or union is a collective bargaining group who represents the welfare of workers who work together to resolve grievances. All the workers engaged with the labor organization or the Union strives together to achieve objectives such as wages, working conditions, and working hours. The greatest power of a union in health care is that of collective bargaining. This allows members to negotiate with employers as a group, rather than as individuals. Several labor laws have been created to administer the internal workings of unions and their relations with employers. The effect of labor relations in health care systems is that it helps managers avoid errors they would not otherwise recognize. In the management of my health care organization, I understand that things will never be clear in measuring quality in health care, but we must learn to make sense of what is in front of us and allow workers to make the best decision possible at that time. I was raised in a union family but grew up to be a company man. I can see both sides and their opinions. I believe we need unions to keep the companies who are not union from treating their employees unfairly, regarding wages, days off, etc. There are good unions that are so effective and there are weak unions who give unions a bad name. Some companies will always treat their employees well and be fair but for those who don't, there has to be someone watching out for their rights. If those companies know that if their employees are treated unfairly, there is an organizer willing to step in and help, the company generally will step up to the plate and do the right thing. In 1902 a group of horse and buggy drivers created the Teamsters Union, in that the Teamsters were employed to transport goods. This occupation has played an important part in the economic development of the United States. Although they worked under difficult circumstances at the turn of the twentieth century they began to unionize on an extensive scale. There was no established national organization until 1912 that the teamsters were secure. Back in those days certain crafts and professions were considered as public-interest endeavors, which were licensed and regulated by the town authorities. Included in the teamsters which started with cart-men were; doorkeepers, butchers, and bakers.
