a lot of physiological changes that occur during this time of human development which include regular mood swings, the feeling from happy to depressed becomes a shorter span of time, changing levels of hormones in the body. The concept of healthy thinking is defined by processing cognitive information through behavioural and emotional change (PC Kendall, Behaviour Therapy, 1992). There is a 10-25 year life expectancy reduction in people who suffer from a mental illness which Brent could possibly be at risk for if he does not look after his well being, so it is important to keep a healthy and sustainable well being by practising healthy thinking. Physical activity is also a major enabler in maintaining a healthy well being as it releases endorphins which is a hormone that is secreted within the brain and nervous system which give positive psychological effects. Healthy thinking offers increased lifespan, better physical and psychological well being and better coping skills in times of stress. oxford definition labouvie-veif 2015
Brent is very family orientated and loves to be involved in his grandchildren’s lives.
Something he looks forward to is transporting his grandchildren to school everyday, but from his unsuccessful shoulder surgery Brent has lost the ability to drive which therefore prevents him from sharing that part of his life with his grandchildren which could ultimately alter the strength of the relationship they all share. Not being able to be involved in his grandchildren’s life as much as he used to could essentially bring his ability to have hope in keeping those relationships strong as he wont be a big part of their life anymore. This would put a large amount of stress and pressure on Brent to try and keep the relationships strong with his grandchildren. According to Tornstam, L, loneliness is most common in old age where social losses and functional health restrictions start to become more frequent, “loneliness is a powerful trigger for a variety of disadvantageous changes in health and well-being” (Tornstam, L (2007). Stereotypes of old people persist). In relation to Brent’s situation the social losses that he is losing would be building stronger relationships with his grandchildren and his health restriction would be his limited shoulder movement. A suggestion for maintaining the relationship with his family and for Brent to still be involved in his grandchildren’s lives could be to spend time with them after school, help with homework or take them out on the weekends with the rest of their family. This would ensure that the bond between them would stay strong. Brent would feel as though he is still helping and having a good influence on their lives as well as benefiting seeing them grow. From the book, Growing Older: Quality Of Life In Old Age - Extending quality of life: it says “The qualitative study confirmed the importance of grandchildren to grandparents. The grandparent-grandchild relationship was the most important in their
life”
Brent was a very active squash player who played at least twice a week with his friends. Squash would have been a heavily social aspect of his life but because of his shoulder restrictions it has limited his ability to play and enjoy it leading him to grow a fear of missing out on what he once was extremely involved with. Social isolation is very common on middle-older aged adults because they are unable to do the things that they once enjoyed because of aging factors like physical deterioration and loss of cognitivity. Social isolation are associated with lower levels of physical health in which Brent will be experiencing because he is lowering his level of participation in the physical aspect of squash. According to Erin York Cornwell and Linda J. Waite (2009), “social isolation poses health risks including living alone, having a small social network, infrequent participation in social activities, and feelings of loneliness”. Even though Brent is restricted from playing he can still keep himself involved to stay in the social aspect of it. An alternative way he can still appreciate the social aspect of it would be to go and support his friends or become a referee for the game. This gives him reason to still value squash and socialise just from a different perspective. It also gives him a feeling of purposeful involvement which would boost his self esteem overall positively influencing his mental health. Author, Ernst Wynder offers that exercise provides a remarkable enhancement in satisfaction of life. Social relations are also associated with an increase in happiness with life and reductions in loneliness.
Brent connects with his family through a spiritual lense which includes their traditions, values and beliefs. Brent’s wife comes from a large Italian family and food is a huge part of their life. The stress that Brent has been under throughout his surgery has had an effect on his eating habits and the lack of communication that him and his family have suffered has affected the ability to enjoy the little things like having a family dinner, leading to have major effects on his mental health. From not getting the right nutrition from the his loss of appetite would be a risk. He feels as though he can’t talk to his family about his loss of appetite because they’re very traditional when it comes to family meals making Brent feel like he has some kind of expectation to hold to keep their tradition alive. As stated by Schafer, Elizabeth D. (2013), poor nutrition can be affiliated with mental disorders. She proclaimed that food impacts the brain’s potential and structure and access to or loss of nutrients shapes mental health. Communication is key in this area, especially with his wife. Being able to talk about what’s going on inside his mind can drastically help with coping because it will keep him from suppressing his feelings. Brent needs to connect and communicate with his family in order for him to be happy with the change in lifestyle that he is being faced with and by having the support of his family will definitely help him. JO Greene and BR Burleson. (2003) suggest that communication is the roots of understanding one another and people’s level of communication skills is key to their well being as an individual. Some of the most important actions we engage in are communicative.
Conclusion
Brent will find himself having a lot more “free time” not necessarily freedom as he is restricted to what he can and cant do which would lead to loneliness.
