West Laurel Water District asked ($4,500.00) forty-five hundred dollars to provide a water meter and water service for my new home construction. In the case of Honig v. Doe, it was the first case to reach the Supreme Court dealing with discipline of special education students. This case took place in 1988 after two students from the San Francisco School District with emotional disabilities and aggressive tendencies were threatened with expulsion. John Doe (a pseudonym) was a socially and physically awkward 17 year-old who had difficulty controlling his impulses and anger. From early on in school, physical abnormalities, speech difficulties, and poor grooming habits resulted in his being the target of classmates teasing and ridiculing him. One day, in response to taunts from a fellow student at a developmental center for disabled students, he reacted in an explosive manner anticipated by his individualized education (IEP). He choked a student with enough force to leave abrasions on the boy’s neck. Afterwards, while being taken to the principal’s office, John kicked out a window. John was suspended from school for 5 days. The principal recommended that he be expelled. The setting of this story takes place on the planet Prelandra, also known as Venus. This planet consists of many floating islands. The islands are quite beautiful, the clouds are purple and the sky is a golden color, the seawater is green and drinkable, from the distance the water looks like glided glass. The islands are not very stable, and they can shake if water hits the mobile islands. All of the islands are mobile, except the main island, which remains stationary. Maledil, the people's god, forbade them to spend the night on the main island; therefore the inhabitants of Perelandra stay on one of the mobile islands. There are many different types of inhabitants on Perelandra, dragons, exotic fish, possums, and unusual looking birds. Ransom, the books main character, mistook the birds for bat-winged reptiles when he first arrived on Perelandra. The tropical climate provides a pleasant atmosphere on Perelandra, thus allowing the inhabitants to move about freely, basking in the agreeable weather.…
This type of manipulation is not something new that’s happening, it can be traced back to the twentieth century. Edward Bernays knew how to use the media to spread his message and help break the “taboo” of women smoking in public. He hired beautiful women and publicized them smoking in the Easter Day parade of 1929 to help the American Tobacco Company, and it worked. Corporations have learned that when a crisis happens, they need to manage the public perception. The Tylenol poisoning case was handled well and reassured the Americans that the problem would be resolved. Unlike the Exxon-Valdez oil spill which did very little to reassure the public and led to outrage.…
In many business situations, the best way to solve problems is to admit that the problem is indeed there and to find the best way possible to solve the crisis. A great example of this is Johnson and Johnson’s ability to rebound after the Tylenol Crisis of 1982. The first thing that they did correctly was put the people first by recalling all of the capsules to protect anyone else from getting hurt, and they stopped all of the advertisements. Even though they weren’t responsible for the product tampering, they assumed full responsibility. They permanently removed the capsules from the market after a woman died from cyanide poisoning. Exxon on the other hand took a very long time to send aid for the oil spill in Alaska. Their chairman didn’t fly to Alaska until two weeks after the spill, instead they sent an untrained team to deal with these problems. This lead the public to believe that Exxon didn’t think the oil spill was a big deal. While Johnson & Johnson actually announced the suspension of their product, Exxon only communicated with the small town of Valdez. In contrast to Johnson & Johnson, Exxon didn’t take full responsibility for this accident. The biggest difference between these two companies and their crises and their later successes or failures is that one company (Johnson & Johnson) took responsibility of their actions and kept communications with the public about their incident, therefore leading to the success of their product’s reintroduction. Exxon on the other hand neglected any responsibility and didn’t seem to care about the environment or the loss in tourists’ dollars.
