In order to achieve this goal the CDC promotes positive health based programs both in communities and places of employment. If employers create a healthier workplace then not only will it decrease the likelihood that employees will have to miss work due to injury or illness, it will also ensure higher productivity from staff. If companies enact policies and procedures that support health it will make that company more attractive place to work for both existing employees and potential new employees. The five main categories that CDC recommends offering health information and care for employees are behavioral health, health screening, mental health, injury, and adult immunizations (CDC, 2013). Providing services for things like depression, alcohol and substance abuse, smoking cessation, and nutrition courses will help provide overall better lives for employees which will result in having more highly motivated productive workers while they are on the job.. Some ideas for promoting a healthier workplace to lower obesity would be offering lunches to employees to purchase that consist of fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads. Employers can put together exercise groups or offer reimbursement to employees who obtain gym memberships and attend at least four…

The reason for this report is due to the amount of health care costs that have increased in the last three years. ABC Corporation has had an increase of more than 200% within the past three years in insurance premiums being paid. Although ABC Corporation has provided its employees with great healthcare plans, the cost, as you will see, has increased exponentially. My findings will reveal potential trends in and outside of the work environment that have contributed to this increase. There are many factors that contribute to our health status. Just like school is a big part of a child’s day, the work force for adults is the same. In school, teachers offer us the tools we need to be successful and we will see that our work environment can also provide our employees with tools to begin or maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent many chronic diseases.…

In the year 1999, a meeting took place at the Minneapolis headquarters of Pillsbury. The guest list of the meeting included CEO’s and presidents of America’s largest food companies like Nestlé, Kraft, Nabisco, General Mills, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola and Mars. The CEO’s and company presidents came together to discuss the issue of America’s emerging obesity problem and how to deal with the problem. They came to a conclusion that people were blaming their products for the obesity epidemic in the country. The salt, sugar and fat content in their products were way too high and were causing Obesity-related conditions like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. These conditions are some of the leading causes of preventable death. According to the article, “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” in the New York Times, “More than half of American adults were now considered overweight, with nearly one-quarter of the adult population — 40 million people — clinically defined as obese. Among children, the rates had more than doubled since 1980, and the number of kids considered obese had shot past 12 million”. The presidents were not able to come to a…

The dilemma lies in the fact that unfortunately, much of the U.S. population is obese. According to the 2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, “More than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese.” This is our America… an unhealthy one. What’s worse, is that our future doesn’t appear to be very promising, either. According to the same Nutrition Examination, “About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese.” What’s the impact of obesity? A study was run by Virginia Tech and the University of Buffalo, examining how individuals with various weights complete different work tasks. The results concluded that obese workers had a forty percent shorter endurance time than healthier workers. You see, obesity is a tragic epidemic that is taking over the future of American workers. Employers who implement wellness programs or higher insurance premiums are not doing so out of discrimination… they are doing so because they want the overall public to possess a brighter future and a favorable quality of life. As William Pollard once stated: “Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is…
