After completing a Master of Arts in Teaching Physical Education, fifth grade teacher at Twin City Elementary School, Dawn Boddiford, embarked on another challenge…getting rid of chairs in her classroom and replacing them with stability balls.
Her previous research on the topic was enough to convince her that it would be a win-win decision for everyone involved. Article after article that she had read raved abouth the benefits: students with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could focus better, students were engaged more often and for longer periods of time, student performance and tests scores improved.
With her mind set on trying something new, and stepping outside of the “teacher box”, and her heart set on finding ways to better meet the needs of ALL of her students, she began looking for financial support through grants, sponsors, and individuals who would support her idea. That’s when Mikell Clifton overheard a phone conversation at the ball filed, between her and TCE’s principal, Mrs. Katie Johnson. It was then that he offered to help on behalf of the Swainsboro Jaycees. Within two weeks the deal was sealed, and the Jaycees had agreed to purchase 30 stability balls for Mrs. Boddiford’s fifth grade students. …show more content…
I had to get them to see the balls as ‘seats’ and not toys,” says Mrs. Boddiford. The biggest, most notable difference has been the attentiveness that her students are displaying during instructional class time. “For the most part, they are focussed on me and their work. Mrs. Boddiford says, “The extra energy they would normally use to distract class or mess with other classmates, is being used to balance themselves on the ball.” The students say they don’t get tired or bored in class as easily now, because they can move by doing
