The Cask of Amontillado is Edgar Allan Poe’ s classical model of his horror. The short story is very terse and forceful. It deals with the theme of revenge and death. The story has a rich atmosphere of horror and unconventional aesthetic characteristics, which conveys unique artistic style and reveals the darkness and evil in humanity. Every sentences and words in the story serves for horror results. The story not only analyses the human nature, but also inflects terror of the external world and seeks for people’s internal horror.

    Claiming to have suffered many insults from the latter, the aristocrat Montresor—whose name mon trésor “my treasure” calls to mind leisurely indolence and curbs our sympathy for the unlikely hero—vows revenge.     In "The Cask of Amontillado" Poe uses descriptive language and imagery to create a sense of intrigue and an enticing character and situation, expanding the rhetorical strategy of maintaining a state of suspense.
