The class system is defined as a “social stratification based on both birth and individual achievement.” (Macionis 209). The caste system is defined as “social stratification based on ascription, or birth.” (Macionis 208). The big difference between the caste system and the class system is that you cannot change your status in the caste system. The definition makes this clear as it states that your rank is ascribed, or in other words, given to you at birth. From the moment you are born into the caste system, you are given a social rank, and no matter what you do to better yourself, your role cannot change. One can choose or not choose to receive an education, which will affect their social stratification. Education plays a large role in the class system because typically the more education one has, the higher they can reach. One can also pick an occupation to peruse, and over time if they do not like it anymore, they can change to another occupation. Members within the class system can also participate in any religion they see fit, or they can choose not to participate. In my opinion, I think the class system is clearly the better option and works the best. In the caste system, one can work tirelessly for days on end, and receive nothing in return. I feel as though in the class system, people have more motivation to achieve success, and they also have more of a reason to strive to achieve success.
