When looking at Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror”, one can obviously make out a girl observing herself in front of a mirror. The woman is portrayed one way before the mirror and another way in her reflection. Picasso is obviously sending a message behind the meaning of his work. He also, more than likely, has a reason and story behind why he rendered the work of art. This message and story become useless when it is reproduced onto a computer screen, according to John Berger. In his Ways of Seeing, Berger explains how technology accompanied by today’s world has somewhat tainted the worth and overall beauty of experiencing art. One no longer has the ability to remove him or herself from reality or as Clive Bell would say, have an “aesthetic…

During his appointment with Art, Pavel the therapist states that, “[M]aybe it’s better not to have any more stories” (Spiegelman 45) in response to Art’s troubles regarding the creation of Maus II. In a sense, this statement about the Holocaust is valid due to the fact that the only stories individuals will ever get to read are of those who were able to survive. As Pavel had also stated, “Life always takes the side of life, and somehow the victims are blamed” (Spiegelman 45), showing that, in all of the stories surrounding the Holocaust, individuals never get to hear the stories of those who perished. As a result, every single story surrounding the Holocaust will technically always be the same because it will almost always be a story of a survivor…

“McDonald’s operates more playgrounds than any other private entity in the U.S. It is responsible for the nation’s bestselling line of children’s clothing (McKids) and is one of the largest distributors of toys” (Schlosser 4). According to James McNeal, a marketer at Texas University, before the 1940’s, children were not even viewed as consumers, but as future consumers (10). After WWII, the baby boom occurred, and by 1950 the under-five population was 16,163,000 (McNeal 10). For the first time, children were on the marketing radar. Meanwhile, well-known franchises such as McDonald’s were at their early stages of development. Up until the exhaustively researched work of Eric Schlosser in Fast Food Nation, the extent to which fast food corporations market to children was widely unknown. His work and others’ show that while fast food is convenient, it uses deceptive marketing tactics to lure children, and is incredibly unhealthy.…
