Part of our obligation as Catholics is to grow in prayer, and participate along with contributing to your parish. Another part of our duty to participate in the parish is to give back to the Lord financially. The Archdiocese of St. Louis has looked out for each other for many years through the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) by the help of their stewardship and generosity. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson also specifically states that “Taking stewardship seriously means giving thanks to God through prayer, participation and generosity.” The ACA calls us to fulfill these obligations that were made recognized by Archbishop Carlson by giving back to the Church once a year since the Catholic Church has given so much for us after all.…

Social imagination, “individual problems are to social problems, what is happening outside of one’s personal control. This relationship between individual experiences and public issues is the sociological imagination” (Our Social World Pg9). The book that we read “Gang Leader for a Day” by Sudhir Vankatesh clearly illustrates the sociological imagination. In the early part of the book we see Vankatesh trying to give surveys to a gang to try to understand how they feel about their lives in poverty. The rest of society sees Gang Members as a problem because of the drug trafficking and other illegal activities. When Vankatesh continues to interact with the gang we start to see things from the outside looking in. These…

Because of this, one of the bigger issues that has risen over the past few years is the amount of people that have fled Syria due to the war. Roughly, over four million Syrian refugees had to flee; most of them are women and children. This has not only developed into a problem for the refugees themselves but to many neighboring countries as well. Some of these include Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Greece. The U.N has taken note over the situation since many countries are struggling to accommodate the thousands of refugees that come in on a regular basis.…

One of the major problems facing the United States is whether or not to take in refugees from war and poverty ravaged countries throughout the world. The refugee issue has been highly debated by many politicians. These governors believe that further security measures should be in place to screen refugees for terrorist tendencies. In my introductory meeting with the refugees, it became dishearteningly clear to me that the challenges that they faced far exceeded what any individual with a tenuous cultural link could help them overcome. Most of the refugees spoke solely Arabic and lacked any formal education or training which complicated their employment prospects. As a result, they relied on small, temporary government stipends provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. I was disappointed, but ultimately understanding, when my volunteering role was relegated to one of assisting with chores and teaching English to children and older adults. I was disillusioned of the idealistic notion that I could single-handedly help a large group of people in this context, yet remained firmly committed to doing what I could. While doing household chores, primarily with the women, I was able to overhear some of the refugees’ compelling stories, about…
