Lance Peter Sijan; does this name sound familiar to you? Probably not, since he died nearly 50 years ago. Lance happens to be a ‘Medal of Honor’ recipient which is the highest award you could receive in the United States military. He was captured in the Vietnam war when he suddenly crash landed which left him stranded for 46 days until he was taken to a NVA camp. You see, there is a lot to know about Lance Sijan. After finishing the book, I realized that I actually knew a lot about him to the point where it felt like I knew him. Gwen Harwood, An Australian poet who, seems to develop an imaginative, rich form of poetry through the use of recurring themes, complex language techniques and even further through the use of sophisticated structures only seen in the most prestigious of poems in the modern era. Gwen Harwood has a tendency to write poetry that is significant in all eras, cultures and/or societies of the world as she captures, and develops them into a strong universal theme that recurs strongly. These themes seem to endure, and portray the human experience by relating these in forms that resonate through a range of various environments; these poems have an immense structural integrity. These themes are depicted powerfully in poems such as; Father and Child, Violets the 2 poems that I have chosen to discuss in this speech. In the Father and child, it has a unique structure of 2 parts; the 1st (Barn Owl) discusses her loss of innocence in the daughter’s perspective in the past, the second part (Nightfall) Being the downfall to her father, how he is put in an degenerative state, slowly falling to his demise. This is to do with Gwen accepting the inevitability of her father’s death. These 2 poems can be read symbiotically in a dual nature to provide further insight into both their poems, or separately as a poem. The language in the first poem is quite unique. It highlights the use of very simple words, with little complexity, this can be interpreted to show the innocence that the child still possesses, as children (better yet an innocent child) are meant to speak with less complexity than a full grown adult. These sentences also tend to be monosyllabic. ‘I knew my prize, who swooped home at this hour’ are all monosyllabic. As the poem continues, especially after the owl is shot, the child’s vocabulary seems to improve in complexity, losing its monosyllabic nature. This can symbolize the loss of innocence that the child had experienced by killing the owl senselessly. Gwen also uses many…

The lines that best show the satirical and obnoxious tone in "Puce Fairy Book" are "I decline, with thanks, the honour / of cutting off my toe" Those lines represent an atmosphere and a tone that suggest disappointment from the girl. It suggests that love is not as easy as one would want it to be. The setting of disappointment and reality balances quite well and the atmosphere that is created through this balance definitely reinforces the idea that perfection never exists. On the other hand, the lines that best show the contented and deep passionate tone in "The Diverse Causes" are "my daughter burns the lake / by reflecting her red shoes in it." The contentedness and the passion of the narrator to his beloved one are represented by his daughter who is wearing red shoes and burning the lake because of the strong and powerful force of love they have to each other. The tone of obnoxiousness that remains to the end in "Puce Fairy Book" and the tone of contentedness that remains to the end in "The Diverse Causes" show that the lovers in "The Diverse Causes" come together in the new season of spring, while the lovers in "Puce fairy book" separate in the end because of the denial between the girl and the…

The third stanza sets the change for the fourth stanza which is anxious, desperate and pleading. The father who is felling almost abandoned is begging his son not to go, to “Let me tell it!” ‘it’ being the story. By the last stanza the narrator is again in third person (the father) and he is feeling emotional “It is and emotional rather than logical equation” This show the fathers love for his son. He says that his son “posits” (to put forward or ask) in a “supplications” manner (humbly) which makes the “father’s love add up to silence.” This means the he is lost for words. He is so overwhelmed by his love for his son that he is speechless thus leaving his “love [to] add up to…

With the idea of a growing baby in mind, this poem can be interpreted as if the character writing is in the early stages of pregnancy. “You shudder like a sleeping cat” gives imagery of a cat, curled up, occasionally trembling. This is much like a baby, growing in the womb assuming the fetal position. Cat’s generally hide or try to kind cozy places to sleep, which gives imagery as if the growing baby is still very small, and does not take up much space while it hides inside it’s mother, “light as her whiskers” gives indication as to how small and light the growing baby is. “My body just knows you are there, a pulse, a twitch, a pinch, and eyelid closing” molds the hopefulness, but unknowingness of the character writing. She might not be completely sure that she is pregnant, but it hoping that the things she feels aren’t deceiving her, as if she wants to believe that a baby is forming, but isn’t sure. “Floating as scraps of a dream I can’t quite recall” refers to two things. Scraps of a dream may be referring to the growth of the baby in the early stages of pregnancy. The baby is not yet complete yet, and hasn’t formed all of it’s limbs and organs. Using the word “Float” makes the growth and the position of the baby sound graceful. “I can’t quite recall” refers to the way we can only ever remember parts or sections of our dreams, the rest is blurred. It’s as if she is saying that her child is not complete, not whole, it is coming together but parts are missing still. “Hoping to dream you whole” is a very important line in the poem. She is hoping to dream the baby whole. Through out the whole poem, she has been constructing an image of an incomplete child,…

The “Morning Song” uses many language features throughout the poem to provide clear imagery, which shows how the arrival of the baby has affected the speaker’s life. First, the poem starts with the picture of a “fat gold watch,” which expresses the speaker’s idea that time is being taken away from her and that having a child is an enduring responsibility. In addition, the watch also represents the baby’s heartbeat, which is a constant reminder of the baby’s presence. Then the speaker goes on to create an image in the reader’s mind of a “New statue. In a drafty museum.” This image shows a variety of emotions the speaker feels, such as resent, pain, and sorrow. Additionally, the use of “statue” depicts an attitude of resent because it describes a sense of permanence, which the speaker has now recognized that her child has been born. Also, the use of “drafty museum,” creates an idea of distance between the speaker and her child. The statement, “I’m no more your mother,” is another example of the speaker’s attitude, which shows her distance and anger. Another image that aids in the expression of the speaker’s attitude is when she says, “Your mouth opens clean as a cat’s.” This depicts the distinct and loud crys of the infant, which wakes the speaker at night, and it once again shows the distance between the speaker and her infant when she refers to the baby as if it were an object by calling it a cat. These vivid images definitely…

In Cat’s Cradle the narrator John winds his way through the events that eventually lead to the destruction of the human race. Life to John is a quest; a quest that is defined finally by his new found religion Bokononism. He feels that everyone in his life revolves around him as they all search for something of meaning in their lives; this group is called a karass. Life is a gift that is never solicited and often unappreciated after given. Human emotions are often the catalyst behind extremely destructive actions in Cat’s Cradle John feels that he is in love with a girl that he has never met. He feels this way so strongly that he cannot bear the fact of her being with another man. Eventually John comes to marry this girl who he has known for only a short time, and as she perishes he cannot help but be paralyzed with grief. The struggle of a hard third-world life is very evident in all aspects of the San Lorenzo culture. Throughout the novel the people of San Lorenzo struggle with the horrible reality that is their day to day lives. It is only in the outlawed teachings of Bokonon that they can truly find some happiness. Bokononism teaches that life is nasty, that life is short, and that human beings are basically stupid primitive being destined for failure. Through these teachings they learn to except the faults of man and actually come to better their lives and themselves. Life is a struggle to defy the inevitable. Since the beginning of time man has contemplated his own death, labored over the meaning of life, and created religion to explain all that he cannot understand. Death at some point will catch up with all of society and at some point the entire world as human beings have come to know it will come to an end. No one can hide from death or attempt to oust run its ever-expanding claw; death is absolute. It is possibly the only certainty in all of human existence. Whether the sun explodes sucking itself…
