Caucasian In The Story 'Brownies'
5. The use of the word Caucasian in the story “Brownies” is first used when the Brownie Troop first saw the Caucasians in Brownie Troop 909. Having these African-American girls see other white folk was extremely rare, therefore filling them up with rage and envy. One of the girls, Arnetta, pointed out that the girls from Troop 909 smelled of “wet Chihuahuas” and later coined the term “Caucasian Chihuahuas” (357, Meyer). That line it itself made the Brownie Troop go wild and later use it for any situation; everything was Caucasian. They would shout things like: “What are you? Caucasian?” or “That was so Caucasian!” (358, Meyer). The use of the word nigger in this story is used in a much different context. On page 358, Octavia told the troop …show more content…
The word was used. While Arnetta points out that one of the Caucasian girls called Daphne a nigger, they do not realize yet that Troop 909 has some sort of mental retardation. While the girls plan their revenge against Troop 909, they decide the best idea would be to teach them their lesson in the bathroom while they were all alone. As Arnetta and Octavia confront the Caucasian girls first, they realize something is different with them—coming to the conclusion that they think they are retarded. The 909 troop leader appeared into the bathroom only minutes after the incident, following Mrs. Margolin, who became increasingly upset after hearing the news and demanded that her girls apologize. The Troop 909 leader calmly explained to Mrs. Margolin that “It could have happened. See. Our girls are not retarded. They are delayed learners….Some of our girls are echolaic…..I mean, not all of them have the most progressive parents, so if they heard a bad word they might have repeated it. But I guarantee it would not have been intentional.” The irony in this is that the Brownie Troop knew that they were mocking the Caucasians even as they first showed up on the …show more content…
There are a few times in this story that Packer foreshadows that the Troop 909 girls have some sort of mental disability. In the first paragraph, Laurel is telling us the girls are getting off of their bus in pairs of two and have cutesy, childish backpacks, toys, and other belongings. Assuming these girls are all around the same age, there was never once a mention of the African-American girls having such trinkets. Another time is when the girls walk by the 909 group; all they could see was “some of them rapidly fanned their faces with their hands… A few seemed to be lolling their heads in slow circles, half purposely, as if exercising the muscles of their necks, half ecstatically, like Stevie Wonder” (359, Meyer). The fact that Troop 909 is doing this seems a little odd, yet the girls didn’t even think twice about it. On page 362, another strange scene comes up when the girls see how long it takes to hike to the restrooms from their cabin. As they were inside, they notice the bathroom is a disaster compared to the day before from the 909 girls. Daphne decides to stay behind and clean up all of their trash, even though they had called her a nasty name. I believe that Daphne’s attitude shows that she knows they are mentally challenged. She was always so quiet whenever people questioned her about the Caucasians calling her a nigger; maybe she felt guilty about it, or maybe couldn’t stand up for herself and give voice her own

People of different races use the word “nigga”—especially the younger generation of the America—however, using either n-word is still very offensive to people of all races. For instance, Tehran Von Ghasri, an African-American actor, said, “I’m still uncomfortable with [a] white guy saying, ‘You’re cool nigga.’ But in 25 years, I would hope that my kid’s not uncomfortable—because that white guy wouldn’t mean it in a demeaning, degrading way.” What Ghasri’s sentiments about the use of “nigga” by non-blacks reveal is that some African-Americans are still ambivalent about its use outside of the black community. By Von Ghasri explaining how he does not feel comfortable being called “nigga,” clearly illustrates the negative connotation of the word…

While reading Z.Z Packer’s “Brownies,” it is noted that the Brownie troop and troop 909 both represent different groups of “others” through the isolation of race that they’ve been exposed to since a very early stage. All troops in the summer camp are either all white or all black. The black girls in the story were raised in a racially isolated environment, away from white girls as said by Laurel, “When you lived in the south suburbs of Atlanta, it was easy to…

Selina Boyce’s character in Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paule Marshall is a strong, brave, and intelligent one. She is also opinionated and determined. She was not always like this, however. Different experiences in her life cause her to become the young lady she is now. For example, she needs to be strong to cope with the death of her father, and the loss of her boyfriend. She is opinionated because of how she views the association as opposed to how everyone else views it. She is also determined because she finds different ways she could leave her brownstones house in Brooklyn. As a child, Selina probably did not think she would be faced with any of these incidents. Her mental state at that age was…

I did not realize about myself how quickly I stereotype someone not just by the color of their skin but also by the clothes they are wearing, how they talk, and what they choose to eat. I found myself throughout the story, trying to figure out which girl was white and which girl was black. A few examples that I recognized while reading “Recitatif” were when Twyla describes Roberta of being of a whole other race that never washed their hair and smelled funny (Levine 1403). When she referred to her being of a whole other race she was saying that Roberta was either black or white which would have been the opposite race of…

Before the post-Civil Rights era, whites would frequently use the word "nigger" to social degrade and humiliate blacks. During this time, southern whites would commonly use the word "nigger" instead of "Negro" in order to represent superiority over the blacks. This was especially common for slave owners to refer to their slaves as "niggers" in order to both debase the slaves below human beings and to show ownership over their lives. Even though racist slave owners and other whites called blacks "niggers" during slave times, southern whites also referred to blacks as "niggers" throughout more than half of 20th Century. For instance, it would not be uncommon if a black boy wanted to join a neighborhood game of tag with a group of white boys, and one of the white boys told the rest of the group, "We don't need to be associating ourselves with any niggers, lets go over the white schoolyard because that nigger is not allowed to bother us there." In this hypothetical example, clearly the word "nigger" emphasizes inferiority of the black boy. In addition, it also seems as if the white boys fear that being near this black boy may expose them to some sort of contamination such as leprosy. Hence, the word "nigger"…

The narrator, Davey Morne, describes Herbie as an “Abo” and “boong”, racist terns that are also used by other white teenagers in the story, including Kevin Andrews. This demonstrates to the readers that beliefs and statements of those around us, which form part of our culture, can affect our own opinions and language. People are often influenced by culture without being aware of it.…

In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the word “nigger” is used a great amount of times. This word has a purpose and the argument over if it should be removed or not continues to occur. If the word was to be removed, Huck Finn would no longer be Huck Finn anymore. In a video discussing the n word, David Bradley states, “But to tamper with the author’s words because of the sensibilities of present-day readers is unacceptable. The minute you do this, the minute this stops being the book that Twain wrote” (Bradley).…

The word “nigger” should not be used by anyone regardless of the circumstances. Nigger comes from the Latin word niger meaning black. Nigger was used derogatory term used to refer to black slaves during colonial times. It represents generations of endured racism and oppression. The word was used to make a mockery of black people. “Whether [nigger is] used as a noun, verb, or adjective, it strengthened the stereotype of the lazy, stupid, dirty, worthless nobody,” (Nigger, a brief history). The use of the word “nigger” strips away the individuality of a person. Nigger is evident in hip hop music, the civil rights movement, pop culture, and is now used as a term of endearment.…

Troop 909 was doomed from the first day of camp; they were white girls, their complexions a blend of ice cream: strawberry, vanilla." (Packer, 1) This sentence is impeccably organized so that the blame falls on the troop and not on Laurel. This explains why the author uses first person to tell the story. The reader can see how prejudice Laurel’s point of view is as she witnesses Arnetta and Octavia’s insults. These discrepancies made by Packer, shows the lack of courage to overcome the deeply rooted racism. Moreover, the author uses cynicism to illustrated the contrast between virtue and prejudice as the story becomes complicated to read due to the harshness of dialect used. “What is it Miss Caucausoid? What do you want?” (Packer, 8) or “Oh shut up, Snot” (Packer, 11). Listening to the young girl’s harsh words is the author’s way of showing they are not innocent girls and they show no effort in become one. Laurel sometimes tells her contentious opinion to Arnetta and Octavia. “They won’t ever be alone, “I said. All of the rest of the girls looked at me, for I usually kept quiet. If I spoke even a word, I could count on someone calling me Snot. Everyone seemed to think that we could beat these girls up; no one entertained the thought that they might fight back.” (Pearson, par. 50)…
