The word was used. While Arnetta points out that one of the Caucasian girls called Daphne a nigger, they do not realize yet that Troop 909 has some sort of mental retardation. While the girls plan their revenge against Troop 909, they decide the best idea would be to teach them their lesson in the bathroom while they were all alone. As Arnetta and Octavia confront the Caucasian girls first, they realize something is different with them—coming to the conclusion that they think they are retarded. The 909 troop leader appeared into the bathroom only minutes after the incident, following Mrs. Margolin, who became increasingly upset after hearing the news and demanded that her girls apologize. The fact that Troop 909 is doing this seems a little odd, yet the girls didn’t even think twice about it. On page 362, another strange scene comes up when the girls see how long it takes to hike to the restrooms from their cabin. As they were inside, they notice the bathroom is a disaster compared to the day before from the 909 girls. Daphne decides to stay behind and clean up all of their trash, even though they had called her a nasty name. I believe that Daphne’s attitude shows that she knows they are mentally challenged. She was always so quiet whenever people questioned her about the Caucasians calling her a nigger; maybe she felt guilty about it, or maybe couldn’t stand up for herself and give voice her own
