In a country that thrives on competition it is no wonder Americans have embraced football as their favorite sport. Every weekend during football season, millions line up, tune in, or change the channel to watch their favorite teams do battle for 60 minutes. It is a rough physical game and at the collegiate and professional levels, played by some of the worlds best athletes. There are many dangers involved when participating in such a sport. Rarely will a player go through a game without being hurt in some capacity. This is part of the game and everyone involved knows it. Because of this, players often have to be the judge of whether they are “Injured”, or “hurt.” The difference being that someone who is just hurt can still perform physically and should be able to return to the game. However if a player is injured, this means that they have been hurt to the point where they are not physically able to play, or to the point that further play could escalate the injury into something much more serious. For most injuries this distinction is easy to make, for instance a sprained ankle can either be ran on or it cant, depending on the extent of the sprain. If a player suffers a concussion though, it can be much more difficult for that player to consider himself injured.…

About 5.3 million people in the United States suffer traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, (Center for Disease Control). The probability of succeeding TBI for people with previous brain injuries is quite high; a study shows a person with two TBI’s is eight times more likely to have another, than a person who never had head trauma. TBI has been most commonly associated with professional athletes participating in American Football, Ice hockey, Boxing, and other contact sports. In the past fifty years, there have been between 200 or so players entering the National Football League each year. In the current years, player safety in NFL has been a major controversial subject, with the main concern being concussions. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury that has been purported to be one of the influences for player suicides, and other symptoms after retirement, including memory loss and depression. In 2012, some four thousand former and active NFL players “joined civil lawsuit against the League, seeking damages over the League’s failure to warn and protect players from concussions,” (The New York Times). While there have been efforts made to try to decrease the number of head injuries, a study done by University of North Carolina showed that 31% of concussed athletes rushed immediately back onto the field after injury (University of North Carolina). This is showing that far too many times, players are being rushed back to the field too quickly. In this essay I will explain the causes of traumatic brain injury in the NFL, in result what actions are being taken by the NFL and the players associate, and if there lays a potential recovery options for those effected by the condition.…

According to (Tator, 2013) approximately 144,000 of pediatric and adolescent patients are treated for concussions in emergency departments every year. In addition, there are also approximately 3.8 million concussions annually as a result of sports. Majority of these concussions occur in pediatrics and adolescents. For most of these patients, the initial point of care after they have sustained concussions is their primary care medical providers. In schools, these are nurses. Thus, it is essential for the nurses to ensure timely recognition and the earliest possible institution of appropriate management for concussions. This is essential in improving clinical outcomes as a result of the concussions. This is especially vital because to this day, there is no sole diagnostic modality that can be used to detect concussions. On the contrary, school nurses have to rely on their knowledge and experience to uncover the symptoms known to be associated with concussions in medical history. They should also rely on conducting a physical examination that is targeted specifically to identifying the known discrepancies related to…

As a student athlete head injuries are relevant to me because I have experienced this type of injury. After researching the topic of head injuries in athletics, I came across three articles that stood out to me. In the article “Sports Medicine and School Nurses: A Growing Need for Further Education and Appropriate Resources” by Cynthia Knight, Karen Badros, Cynthia Madden, Nancy Drewer, Penny Makuchal, the topic of sports medicine and proper treatment of injuries was examined through the experience of the authors and reliable reference sources. The article “Efforts to Prevent Concussions Target Schools: Rising Reports of Head Injuries Prompt Concert, House Proposal” by Christina Samuels, discusses the increase in head injuries in young athletes and the actions in legislation; she uses government statistics and interviews with experienced athletic trainers to support her findings. The third article, “Evaluating Concussions on the Field” by J. Delaney, discusses what a concussion is and when the concussion is no longer an issue. He uses his medical background and reliable references to support his research. This third article by J. Delaney is the best article because it helps answer the question when is it safe to return to the game through a detailed outline of the steps in assessing a head injury.…

The sun was scorching everyone’s skin as we all raced to my school’s dirt field searching for the shade the trees would throw across the ground, but the excitement that was building in everyone was by far more intense than the heat. Today was the day that my class was allowed to play flag football, an event we had all been looking forward to since the start of the fourth quarter. The…

Many studies have indicated that the NFL is a common place for concussions. The logic behind this argument is that football is a contact sport which means that heads are always smashed every game, every week. In this case, every game players experience kicks and blows on their heads. The prevalence of concussions in the league has continued to rise despite various efforts to rule by the NFL to prevent concussions (Teramoto et al. 6).
