Another factor that makes Odysseus a hero is the fact that he has survived great dangers. First, it was the cyclops. Then, he and his men escaped a land of cannibals, but all that did survive was Odysseus and 45 of his troop. They separate into two groups, where one is put in danger by the goddess Circe, where many are turned into pigs. Odysseus gets a gift from Hermes which helps him rescue his men yet again, which portrays him in a very heroic light. They also have to face the underworld, and the sirens. Odysseus even risks his own like by not blocking out the song of the sirens, just so he could make sure his men knew when it was over. One of his major flaws is overconfidence, like when he tries to face a cyclops to steal his resources. He also taunts the Cyclops as they try and sail away, which puts them at even more risk. Had he not done this, more men would have survived. He also acted cruel when he poked out the cyclops eye, had he just gotten him drunk and let him pass out they could have
